Year 5 Targets for

Make sensible predictions based on my knowledge of the text. Use evidence to support my opinions and to answer questions. / When reading with your child, get them to talk about the text they are reading. Ask them about the characters and what they might do next. Encourage them to explain the reasons for their ideas.
Writing / Currently working below/at/above age related expectations
Compositions- Read my own work and make simple additions, revisions and corrections to my writing.
Spelling- Add suffixes to spell longer words e.g. –ment, –ness, –ful, –less, –ly
Handwriting- Consistently form lower-case letters to the correct size relative to one another
Vocabulary, grammar and punctuation- Learn how to use apostrophes for contracted forms/possessive / Encourage your child to read through their work. Ask them to think about whether their sentence makes sense and has the correct punctuation. Encourage them to think about whether they could add in more detail or improve their punctuation range.
Maths / Currently working below/at/above age related expectations
Understand and use the < and > symbols when ordering two and three digit numbers. / When looking at numbers ask your child to think about the value of numbers. Encourage them to arrange numbers into sentences using symbols.
Speaking & Listening
/ Give reasons for my ideas when working alone or in a group. / When having discussions with your child, encourage them to give reasons and explanations for their ideas such as ‘I agree/disagree because…’ ‘I think that will work because…’ Work with your child to extend their reasons by taking the opposing point of view and debating an issue.

Debate different issues found within texts / Ask your child to think about the issue being discussed within a text. Encourage them to give their own opinion about the topic, giving reasons for their opinions.
Writing / Currently working below/at/above age related expectations
Composition-Evaluate and edit sentences by proposing changes to grammar and vocabulary
Handwriting- Increase legibility/consistency/quality of handwriting
Spelling- Use the first two or three letters of a word to check its spelling in a dictionary
Vocabulary, grammar and punctuation - Expressing time, place and cause using conjunctions, adverbs or prepositions / Before your child begins as them what type of writing they are completing. Encourage them to discuss the features required and plan out how they are going to group their paragraphs e.g. what will each paragraph be about?

Find and interpret remainders in division, rounding up or down where appropriate / Whilst solving problems that require a division calculation, encourage your child to think about if their answer is appropriate or whether rounding is required to achieve an answer which makes sense.
Speaking & Listening
/ Respond to the ideas of others, saying whether I agree or disagree with their viewpoint. / During discussions, encourage your child to listen and carefully consider the viewpoints of others. Ask your child whether they agree or disagree with the ideas presented and extend this by explaining which elements they agree or disagree with and why.

Express my personal response to a text although I may not be aware of the writer’s viewpoint. / Ask your child to think about the issue being discussed within a text. Encourage them to give their own opinion about the topic, giving reasons for their opinions.

Composition- Organise sentences into paragraphs around a theme
Handwriting-Increase consistency in handwriting throughout a piece of writing.
Spelling- Use further prefixes and suffixes and understand how to add them
Vocabulary, grammar and punctuation - Extend the range of my sentences with more than 1 clause using a wider range of conjunctions / When writing fiction and non-fiction texts, encourage your child to plan out how they are going to group their paragraphs e.g. what will each paragraph be about?
Whilst writing stories, remind your child to think about when a new paragraph is needed e.g. when there is a change in time, the story moves to a different setting etc.
Maths / Currently working below/at/above age related expectations
Use rounding to find an approximate answer before tackling tricky calculations / Before attempting a calculation encourage your child to estimate first. Ask them to round the numbers involved to help estimate an answer. When finished their calculation, get them to check their answers are similar to the estimate.
Speaking & Listening / When reading a passage, summarise the main points within it. / With your child, ask them what to explain what a passage is about and the main pieces of information within it. When reading a story ask them to explain the main plot e.g. the setting, main characters, problem etc.
