Policy Statements

Child Protection

The British Council creates international opportunities for the people of the UK and other countries and builds trust between them worldwide. We believe good child protection requires everyone to take responsibility. We recognise that the care and welfare of children is paramount and that all children have the right to equal protection from all types of harm or abuse.

The British Council recognises that we have a fundamental duty of care towards all children we engage with including a duty to protect them from abuse. We achieve this through compliance with UK child protection laws and relevant laws in each of the countries we operate as well as by adherence to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) 1989.

Health and Safety

In all that we do the British Council acknowledges our duty of care to ensure a healthy and safe place to work for our staff, customers and visitors. We aim to achieve this through compliance with the safety laws in each of the countries in which we operate. We aim, where practicable, to follow UK standards, guidance and codes of good practice where these offer enhanced standards of health and safety.

Equal Opportunity

Working effectively with diversity is an essential part of the British Council’s work.

We aim to abide by and promote equality legislation by following both the letter and the spirit of it to try and avoid unjustified discrimination recognising such discrimination as a barrier to equality of opportunity, inclusion and human rights.

Environment

Our business operations and activities have an impact on the environment. We are deeply concerned about the impact of climate change, and the over-consumption of natural resources, on prosperity, social justice and quality of life. In line with our corporate values and those of our partners, we commit to minimising our environmental impact while inspiring and supporting positive change in the way people view and interact with the natural world.
