Important Dates
Nov1, 2017:Students currentlyregistered in adegreeprogramat U of G,or on an approvedleave ofabsencefrom U ofG,mustsubmit their hard copy applications andall supportingdocumentation totheGraduate Program Assistant in their department. There is no charge for University of Guelph transcripts for SSHRC if the student orders the transcripts by October 24 and picks the transcripts up.
Nov15:Completeapplicationpackages, including signed DepartmentalAppraisalforms,dueto theOfficeof GraduateStudies.Applicationsmust haveallstaples andenvelopes removedand beinthesameorder as on theApplicationChecklist.
Nov 16– 21:GraduateAwards Officers preparefiles for review
Nov21– Dec 5:Office ofGraduateStudiesAwards Committee members reviewandscoreapplications
Dec 5:Graduate AwardsCommitteemeets toselect the21 applicationstobeforwarded tothenationalSSHRCDoctoral competition.

Important NotesontheDepartmental Appraisal Process
Carefullyreadtheguidelinesprovided by SSHRC forcompletingtheDepartmentalAppraisal.
Itisimportantto make clear, supportive remarks for each student.The absenceofremarkswill benoted bythe University selection committee andmay beinterpreted asa lackofconfidenceinthecandidate’s abilities.
Weexpectunitswithseveral excellentcandidatestohavemorethanone candidatewhoischecked off as “Outstanding”.Those marked lessthan“Outstanding”areless likelyto beforwarded toSSHRC.Thereshould benounexplaineddiscrepancies betweenthe DepartmentAppraisalandthetwoletters of appraisal.
If an application isto beforwardedtothe Universityselectioncommittee where thestudentdoesnothaveafirstclass average,clear justificationofthis decision whichoutlines themerit oftheapplicationmustbeprovided.
When reviewing applicants’transcripts, pleaseflag(with a “Post-It”flag)anytranscriptswith part-timesemesters or leavesofabsence at the doctoral level.
Shouldyoureceive SSHRC applicationdocumentationor requestsforassistancewith theSSHRCapplicationprocessin French,pleasecontactthe GraduateAwardsOfficers ifyourequireassistance.
