Spring ISD Community, Staff and Parents:

Over the weekend, I posted my personal thoughts on my personal Facebook page about the political climate of our country, along with a call for the average citizen to move forward in a way they find productive. In those thoughts, I shared uncertainty about diversity.

In doing so, I can reflect on the perception that my feelings marginalized certain groups, which ironically in itself would contradict the goal of diversity. I had a chance to personally talk to parents and community members who were offended by the post. We had some candid discussions on my perceptions and their perceptions and how we as a nation must move forward.

I thought about how I may have felt if the words were reversed. Carefully crafted media apologies are for PR, but self-reflection is for anyone who wants to be a better leader. I self-reflected and asked myself: If I feel passionately about an issue, how can I harness that passion in a way that is inclusive and beneficial to all?

The people I spoke with today all agreed that we need more self-reflection. Because of that, I truly appreciate your responses. I understand that many of you have welcomed me and trusted me with leading this campus – and trust is earned not given. I preach to the kids about social media all the time! I am truly exhibiting an example of a learning experience for others and myself.

I appreciate the feedback you have provided from all sides. We are always better when we can talk about our differences.

Sincerely,

Diaka Carter
