KS 1 Spring Growing Programme Outline 2014/15

Welcome children and arrange into new mixed groups or pre-existing groups. “Getting to know you” or re-acquainting session and establishing why they are at Speedwell.

Icebreakers and warm up activities with the aid of a parachute.

What happens in spring? Introduction (use of power point for visual aid)

Children learn about the different changes which take place during this spectacular season. ( buds on trees, flowers beginning to appear, bird’s building their nests, young animals being born etc.) Specimen animals such as the Hedgehog and Swallow are used to aid discussion about hibernation and migration.

BREAK

Spring Walk

Children go on a spring walk through the park investigating, exploring and observing the spring changes, including buds, flowers and animals. In groups they complete a nature trail tick list.

Outdoor activities - for example, the construction of a “bird’s nest” on the ground.

Children partner another pupil from link school and find out several details

about them.

EYR – if time children can visit the Spring play room and take part in different activities.

Art/Craft Activity

Paper plate birds nest – Each child makes their own birds nest using paper plates and decorative materials.

KS 1 Autumn in the Forest Programme Outline 2014/15

Why are we here today? (1) We are here to learn about autumn. (2) We are here to get to know children from another school a little better and make new friends (does anyone know someone from the other school already (3) We are here to enjoy ourselves and have some fun.

BREAK

Activity 2 – Autumn Walk around Parkanaur Forest Park

Children go on the Autumn walk around the forest and participate in a leaf shower, are shown hedgehogs home, Squirrels store and drey. Children also see and identify leaves and trees and observe Autumnal changes. Each group outside is given a tub and a list of Autumn treasures to collect.

#Foundation# - Structured play in the early years room. Activities include:-

Investigation table/scrunch boxes, puppet corner, making a hedgehog out of clay and decorative resources. Squirrel tail (tray left of feathers for children to decorate their squirrel). Leaf crown, pipe cleaner hedgehog etc.
