A Street Photography Reflection

Presenters: Walter Horishnyk and Richard Ott

Sharing a cramped flat on 31st and Broadway, Walter Horishnyk and Richard Ott resided in the throbbing, engorged, endlessly beating heart of Midtown Manhattan. Every new day greeted with high expectation, they sallied forth as the valiant knights of the still image. Winding their way where sun, shadow and crowds beckoned, Walter (from the Midwest) and Richard (from New Yawk), look to make pictures to impart their personal visions of the city. In this presentation, they will present their journey in images and words of NYC and more of the wonderful world of street photography.

Walter Horishnyk has been a photographer for the past 20 years, and has been creating art in various forms his entire life. He attended the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, focusing on film photography and fine arts. He has received a number of awards for photographic and graphic design excellence. Street photography in color and black and white has become his main focus and passion because it documents the convergences of art and life in a split second. He regularly shows his work of Minnesota, New York City and Havana street photography in galleries. Walter also specializes in live music performances, capturing the musicians’ emotions and energy.

Richard Ott has been working as an American documentary and street photographer for more than 40 years. With a PhD in anthropology, Richard did field work with Kenya’s Tugen people, where he made an extensive photographic record. Influenced by Gary Winogrand, Richard immersed himself in photography in Minnesota, New York City, China and Vietnam. Richard has done color and black and white commercial, industrial and sports photography through his company Argus Images.He has exhibited in St. Paul, Minneapolis and Hudson, WI. His work is displayed in shows and in private collections.

Rikk Flohr is a professional photographer, image consultant, and instructor. His company, Fleeting Glimpse Images, LLC, provides a variety of services related to photography, graphic design and instruction. Flohr operates a full studio and shoots corporate events around the U.S. He has represented Adobe Systems as a community manager and has been a featured columnist for CorelDraw. He regularly presents at regional photographic societies and teaches a variety of topics in digital capture, processing and workflow.Flohr offers twice-yearly Badlands photography workshops and is a field and classroom instructor for Worldesigns Tours to Costa Rica. Flohr states, “I see the world and capture it, recreating it in my mind to match my singular vision and sole interpretation of reality. Beauty I see, and beauty I intend to convey.”

Exploring Time Through Time-Lapses

Time-lapse videos are everywhere! From social media to websites to commercials to documentaries – time-lapses have hit the mainstream. The good news is that there has never been a better time to learn how to make your own. With camera gear you most likely already have and a few easy-to-learn processing techniques, you’ll be up and making incredible time-lapse videos before you know it!For beginners through advanced photographers.

Dr. Mike Shaw is a night and nature photography book author, workshop leader and free-lance photographer/filmmaker based in St. Paul, Minnesota. Before his photography career took off, he was a physics and astronomy professor for over fifteen years. He also worked as an applied physics research scientist for over ten years. Yes, he IS a rocket scientist! Shaw says, “My photography expresses the freedom I feel when I’m outdoors in nature. My favorite images are those filled with the joy of being alive, a vital part of nature’s web. I constantly look for that connection with the wildness of the natural world; untamed yet harmonious. My photographic quest is to merge both elements inside the camera as I search for those elusive glimpses of nature’s perfection.”

Composite Images: Using Layers in Photoshop

Presenter: Michelle Terrell

This walk-through presentation uses the construction of three images to illustrate ways in which Photoshop layers can be used to combine multiple images into a single composite photograph.Skill Level: beginner tointermediate.

Michelle Terrell is vice president of the St. Croix Valley Camera Club and an avid outdoor photographer.As a native Minnesotan, she enjoys documenting our state's wide variety of natural subjects from tiny woodland fungi to horizon-spanning northern lights. Michelle is regularly invited to give talks on photographic subjects, including a presentation on Night Sky Photography at last year’s Spring Break. When not taking photos, Dr. Terrell is a professional archaeologist and historian.

High Dynamic Range (HDR) Photography

Presenter: John Alexander Kay

This presentation is for anyone interested in HDR photography techniques, tips and gear. It will also cover preparing your images for web posting to protect your files from unauthorized usage.

John Alexander Kaysays, "I love making art, not just taking photos!" Kay is a published, award-winning, photographic freelance artist who composes, designs and produces landscape, wildlife, retro, architecture, plant life, etc. He offers photographic art for sale via his professional website or through personal contact with individuals, businesses or corporations. His landscape photographs stand out from most, as he uses the High Dynamic Range (HDR) process where he takes five to seven photographs and blends them into one final image which gives them more depth and a "Wow!" factor, especially when printed on dye-infused aluminum metal prints.

Spirituality in Photography

Presenter: Douglas Beasley

Douglas Beasley’s lifelong personal vision explores the spiritual aspects of people and place and is concerned with how the sacred is recognized and expressed in everyday life. This is not a technical presentation, but rather a visual and theoretical one. The skill level is appropriate for all levels, from beginning to advanced, but the intermediate and advanced photographer will benefit the most.

Douglas Beasley worked in commercial photography after receiving a BFA from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. This experience helped him develop an appreciation for attention to detail and technical proficiency. Beasley opened his own studio in Minneapolis, emphasizing commercial and editorial fashion. Much of Beasley’s personal work uses his creative vision to seek out spirituality and the notion of what is sacred in both his photography and in his life. He recently became the owner and publisher of Shots Magazine, a quarterly independent journal of fine-art photography, now in its 31st year of publication.

Capturing Mushrooms

Presenter: Patrick Harris

The Capturing Mushrooms presentation will focus on understanding, locating and photographing top edible and toxic mushrooms of the Midwest and West Coast. Proper tools, gear, and safety will also be highlighted.

Patrick Harris has been mushrooming since he was four years old. He began foraging for morel mushrooms like most people start out, but now mushrooms from April to October throughout the United States for a wide variety of species. Harris is a member of the Minnesota Mycological Society (MMS) and Minnesota Valley Photography Club (MVPC).

Photography Trip Planning

Presenter: Don Tredinnick

Are you wanting to take a photography vacation or trip and don’t know where to start?If you have never taken this type of trip before, the whole thing can seem a little overwhelming. This presentation will cover everything from when and where to go, and what to take, to traveling safely and getting the most from your travel experience.

During this lecture, we will discuss all aspects of photography trip planning including:

  • Selecting a destination
  • Tools for researching locations
  • Going with a group, or going it alone
  • Differences between photo tours and photo workshops
  • Selecting, packing and traveling with your equipment
  • What to do during and after the trip.

Don Tredinnick is owner of Frozen Hiker Photography. Since 2010 he has been leading photo hikes, some with lectures, at the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge. He currently leadseight hikes a year as a volunteer at the refuge, teaches classes and leads workshops. He enjoys shooting nature, wildlife, old dilapidated buildings and equipment. Don logs an average of 50,000 air miles a year and has photographed destinations around the world, sometimes in very remote locations.Some recent trips have been to Kaktovik, Alaska;the Galapagos Islands; Death Valley National Park; and Yellowstone National Park. His photos have been published in magazines, newspapers, calendars and marketing materials. Some recent publications have been Lake Superior Magazine, 2017 Galapagos Conservancy Calendar and The Virginian Pilot. He has also participated in various galleries around Minnesota

Reaching Your Target Audience With Social Media

Presenter: Calinn Green

Social media is a powerful and free tool for photographers. Learn how to build an online presence and reach your target audience using social media. The platforms we will be focusing on are Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Linkedin. We will discuss the features of each platform, how to attract a following, how to share, what to share, and the importance of your online branding.

Calinn Green is a United States Air Force veteran who found her passion in photography. After her mother passed away, she rebranded to focus on photographing women and preserving their legacy. She quickly found that her purpose was to build confidence and self esteem while providing a memorable experience. Green finds joy in helping veteran-owned businesses and small businesses build their online presence to communicate the company mission through images and video. While taking a few breaks from business to raise children, Green started experimenting and learning more about social media and how to use it effectively as a business tool.

Beginning and Advanced Studio Lighting

Presenter: Dave Johnson

One flash, two flash, three flash,four. What can we do with a flash to create dynamic lighting? We will start with some simple basics and move right into adding additional flashes and modifiers to enhance our subject to create stunning portraits. After the demonstration, there will be some time you to capture an image or two. Learning these simple rules will enhance your photographic tool box while having fun!

Dave Johnson, Cr., CPP, AFS-MNPPA, CPC, has been involved in photography for many years. He has worked for many photo companies, and is currently department manager of the wedding and portrait division at National Camera Exchange. Johnson has a passion for teaching, and has been giving seminars since 1973. His studio, Silver Images, began with weddings and commercial photography and now includes building custom computers for imaging, workflow consulting, website design, retouching, and Photoshop.Johnson offers training and assistance on custom workflow solutions. He is a member of PPA and serves as a council member, Minnesota PPA (MNPPA). He is a past president of The Twin Cities Professional Photographers Associationserved on their board and was their Newsletter Editor and Webmaster. He has received a Masterpiece Award, Minnesota’s Addie Award (MPPA’s highest service award), the Silver Service Award and PPA’s National Award. He has his Masters and Craftsman Degree and is PPA Certified. He holds his accredited, Fellowship and Service Degrees from Minnesota Professional Photographers Association. Dave is also a member of Photo Marking Association (PMA); Digital Imaging Marketing Association (DIMA) and is a Certified Photographic Councilor through PMA.

Taking the “Mystery” out of backlighting

John Pennoyer

This presentation will discuss exposures for backlit subjects, discussion on “flare,” rim-lighting, use of filters, with just a touch of post-processing information.

John Pennoyer grew up in Kalispell, Montana, where trout fishing, hunting and hiking were his early introduction to the outdoors. For many years, he worked as an automotive technician, finishing his 24-year career with General Motors as an automotive instructor for GM Technicians. Pennoyer started photography as a hobby, quickly moving to selling his images to publishers. He has excelled in teaching photography since the early 2000s, including many photography classes and workshops for the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. He has instructed Black Bear Workshops in Northern Minnesota for 16 years, has been a member of the Minnesota Nature Photography club since 1983 and was given “Honorary Member” award in 2004. He is a past president and is still very active in the club today.

Judging Photography

Presenter: Darrell Tangen

Whether you are judging competition for a club, or just judging whether your images are good enough to enter in a salon or contest, I believe the judging techniques are very similar. This mini workshop will help you understand what factors a judge may consider when looking at images. We'll explore a number of different criteria used by different organizations that are often used to pick the winning images. TCACCC is always looking for well-qualified judges, and there are plans to offer classes to train more judges. So, whether you are interested in becoming a judge or just want to make better decisions about your own images, this workshop may be for you.

Darrell Tangen has taught all forms of photography at Dakota County Technical College for the last 25 years. He is a master teacher of photography and a world traveler who has always enjoyed the challenge of constantly changing technology and trends in photography. Tangen is fluent in using the latest software for digital image editing, enhancement and manipulation. He holds degrees in Photographic Technology from Staples Tech College, an A.S. in Technical Communication from Anoka-Ramsey Community College, a B.S from the University of Minnesota and a Master's in Education from St. Mary's. Tangen holds a state certification for teaching photography and is currently working on his Certified Professional Photographer award from Professional Photographers of America (PPA). Along with his educational experience, Darrell and his wife Gayle have been running their own fine art nature photography business for 18 years and sell his photographs at art shows and galleries in the upper Midwest.
