SPORTS AWARDS CRITERIA

The Sports Awards Committee will consist of the Sports Awards Assistant, Head of Student Wellbeing, Student Activities Manager, Sports Working Action Group (SWAG) Chair and the Elected Student Officer for sport.

The committee reserves the right to accept, reject, create, up-grade or down-grade any nominations.

Colours will be awarded on a retrospective basis, that is, from May 2016 to May 2017.

For the following awards the nominee must be a current Kingston University student and must have a Sports Card Membership or Boat Club Membership. Any club member can win a full/half club colour from either category below.

Individual Full Colours - Achievement

To be considered for a Full Colour at least one of the following requirements must be satisfied:

1.The nominated individual must have represented their country at Senior, University, and junior level during that year. Proof of doing so must be attached to the Nomination Form.

2.The nominated individual must have won the BUCS competition or equivalent in their designated club.

E.g. BUCS Boxing Individual Gold Medallist

3.Consideration will also be given to individuals with suitable outstanding achievement relating to their specific club. E.g. National Non-BUCS events e.g. Taekwondo British Student Championships

Individual Half Colours - Achievement

To be considered for a Half Colour at least one of the following requirements must be satisfied.

1.The individual must have represented either; a national league team, a county team, or a regional BUCS team, or equivalent according to the specific governing body during that year. Proof of doing so must be attached to the Nomination Form. E.g. Playing for Middlesex County Hockey Team

2.Consideration will also be given to individuals with suitable outstanding achievement relating to their specific club. This is for sports that aren’t regionalised. Individuals must give evidence that they are competing at an equivalent level.

Individual Full Colour/Half Colour - Contribution

This award will be open to any individual from any sports club.

To be considered for a Full/Half Colour for the following criteria must be satisfied:

  1. General management of the club.
  2. Organisation of club sessions/trips/fixtures
  3. Social events
  4. Marketing and communication to members and non-members
  5. Management of club budgets

*The above should be done to a high standard and go above and beyond the committee member’s role.

2.Qualifications/training awards; passing on this knowledge to other members of the club and wider community. E.g Gain a coaching qualification, Kayak Level 1

  1. Involvement in other areas of KUSU and the University
  2. Volunteering e.g. involved in a volunteering project
  3. Fundraising e.g. charity events
  4. Representative position e.g. SWAG representative or executive member.
  1. Expansion of Club activities e.g. extra team, extra training session, diversifying activities
  1. Any other significant contribution e.g. taking a leading role in assisting with events e.g. Varsity, Sports Nights, Sports awards

A Full or Half Colour will be awarded depending on whether the nominated individual has fulfilled the above criteria and to what degree.

Team Full Colours

To qualify for Team Full Colours the team must have won either:-

The BUCS Cup (Championship or Trophy) competition or the national equivalent.

The BUCS League (Tier 1 or Premier) or national equivalent

Team Half Colours

To qualify for Half Colours the team must have won their regional competition i.e. BUCS South Eastern Conference Cup or the equivalent.

Sports Personality of Year

This award is to recognise a student who has contributed significantly to student sport during their whole time at University

  1. A suitable candidate for this award will encapsulate the spirit of university sport. The broad criterion reflects the nature of the award in that a ‘positive contribution’ may take many forms, including performance, service and participation.
  2. The student sports personality of the year may also be a person who has made a significant contribution to the University in terms of representation in a number of sports.
  3. A suitable candidate may also be an individual who has had a significant input to the club both through the activity and around it.
  4. The candidate should fulfil the Individual full contribution award criteria.

Team ofthe Year

This will be given to a team that has shown commitment, motivation and organisation, has turned up for all fixtures and played with a full side. It will not necessarily be given to the most successful team but this will be a major factor when deciding this award. Attendance, recruitment and development of members will also be taken into consideration.

Club of the Year

Club of the Year will be chosen from the winners of the 3 categories below.

Recreational Club ofthe Year

The following clubs may apply to be the Recreational Club of the year: -Clay Pigeon Shoot, Gliding, Karting, and Kayak. Mountaineering, Sailing, Skydiving, Snowsports, Sub Aqua and Wakeboarding.

BUCS Wednesday Club of the Year

The following clubs may apply to be the Recreational Club of the year:-Badminton, Ladies Basketball, Mens Basketball, Cricket, Fencing, Ladies Football, Mens Football, Ladies Hockey, Mens Hockey, Netball, Rugby Union, Rugby League, Tennis and Volleyball.

Championship and Performance Club of the Year

The following clubs may apply to be the Recreational Club of the year: -Boxing, Capoeira, Cheerleading, Dance, Fencing, Jitsu, Taekwondo, Trampoline, and Yoga.

These will be awarded to the most outstanding club of the year in their category and takes into account every aspect of the club including organisation, development, community work, fundraising, general service to KUSU and the University, social life and success if competitive. Each club will state why it feels it should receive the award and all entrants will be judged by the Committee on their merits and compared with one another.

Coach of The Year(Does not need to hold a KUSU Sports Card Membership)

This will be awarded to the best coach of a student club; they may be student coaches or professional. Development of the club as well as the achievement of the club will be considered. Nominees for this award must hold a recognised governing body coaching qualification and be registered as a current club coach with either the Students Union or the Sport and Recreation Service.

The following aspects will be considered:-

  • The Coach’s ability to motivate members of the club, whatever their standard, to aspire to improve
  • The Coach’s contribution to raising the standards of performance of individuals, teams and/or of the club as a whole
  • The Coach’s ability to work effectively with high level performers
  • The Coach’s wider contribution to the development of the club, including its general organisation and strategic planning

Sportsman/Sportswoman Of The Year

These awards will be presented for outstanding sporting achievement by a current University student. Winners of these awards will usually have represented their country at Senior, University or junior level during that year. Evidence of their sporting achievement must be attached to the appropriate Nomination Form. In addition the Awards Committee may, at their discretion, consider nominations by members of the Committee directly.

Please note this is an elite performer’s award.
