COACH ROSS ARNOLD

Course Goal: This course is designed to provide the student with some basic theories and philosophies of psychology that can be applied to his/her field of competition. We will learn many cognitive concepts that, when applied, will allow an athlete to excel at a higher level. The colorful Yankee great Yogi Berra once was quoted as saying “90% of the game of baseball is half mental.” As clever as that sounds I believe that Yogi truly understood the importance of the mental aspect of athletics. Therefore, the objective of this class is to teach athletes how to be mentally tough, properly prepare for performance, perform under pressure and “come through in the clutch.” This will require the students to honestly evaluate themselves as both a person and an athlete on a daily basis. In other words, students will learn to train both their minds and their bodies.

Grading Standard:

100%-94%= A93%-90%= A- 89%-87%= B+

86%-83%= B 82%-80%= B- 79%-76%=C+

75%-73%= C 72%-70%=C- 69%-66%= D+

65%-63%= D 62%-60%= D- 59%- 0%= F

Class Policy And Procedure:

1. Quizzes/Writing Assignments: We will have a 10 minute bell quiz or writing assignment most days at the start of class worth anywhere from 10-20 pts. The quiz will be open study guide and open book. Students absent from class will not be allowed to make up this assignment (unless the absence is for a school activity), but extra credit will be offered throughout the year to make up lost points. Students that are tardy will not be given extra time to complete the bell quiz.

2. Students can make up exams during Flex time. The student will simply need to get a flex pass from me prior to the day of the make-up exam. Exams missed due to un-excused absences or truancies cannot be made up. Also, students who score below 80% on an exam may keep retaking the exam, if they wish, until they score above 80%. No retakes will be offered to students that score above 80% on their first attempt.

3. Any student who is not in the classroom before the door is closed will be marked tardy. If a student is more than 15 minutes late to class it will be considered an absence. Punctuality and preparedness is an important life skill so students will be expected to come to class on time and be prepared every day.

4. Crude and/or profane language will not be tolerated by students in my classroom!!

5. The school dress code, cell phone and electronics policy will be strictly enforced. Students will lose their daily participation points if I see them using their phones at inappropriate times. We will use personal technology to work on assignments from time to time, but students may only have their cell phones visible and in use after receiving permission from me.

6. Students will sit in their assigned seats immediately upon entering the classroom and stay in their assigned seats during the duration of the class period. This means that students will remain in their seats until the dismissal bell rings rather than congregate by the door.

7. Here is what should be an obvious rule. When I am speaking I expect every student to be listening and not talking (no earbuds or head phones will be allowed during instruction time). The same rule applies when another student has been called upon to address the class. This courtesy will never be forfeited.

8. I will post documents, powerpoints, notes, assignments, announcements, and due dates to my blog site for students and parents to access. I suggest that you acquaint yourself with this site and refer to it often. Students need to check the blog to retrieve their makeup work if they are absent. The blog address is blog.weber.k12.ut.us/rarnold

9. Ten participation points will be rewarded on a daily basis. Students will lose participation points for the following actions: not attending class, reading during instruction/learning time, sleeping, not staying on task, excessive talking, and cell phone violation. In other words, students will lose points for not doing what they should be doing…giving effort and paying attention.

10. Late Work: Homework will be accepted late, but it will be docked 20% off the top. It would be wise to make sure your work is well done if it’s going to be turned in late.

Materials Needed:

Students will be required to bring paper, homework projects and a writing utensil to class daily. Students are expected to work on their homework assignments every day in class and will not be allowed to be idle or sleep during class. I expect effort, nothing less.

Food and Pop:

Students will not be allowed to bring food, candy, coffee, energy drinks or soda into the classroom!! Water is acceptable and encouraged.

It is my hope that all of my students enjoy their experience in Sport Psychology learning how to train their minds! Any questions or concerns can be addressed to me via phone or e-mail.
