Consonant-LE Exception
The consonant-le exception involves the letter combination –stle. When a word ends in –stle, the t and e are silent, l is the only letter that makes a sound. The s is part of the syllable before.
Examples:castle------castle
whistle------whistle
Schwa or Consonant-le?
When words end in an /l/ it is hard to tell if it is a consonant-le or schwa spelling.
If it is a schwa, it might be spelled el or al -----Ex. bagel
