Temporary Post:Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) Teacher

Responsible to:Vice Principal (Head of Primary)

The Key Task

The key task of the speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) teacher is to help identify and assess children attending pre-school and nurseries close to the Academy for speech and language needs. The role involves advising staff in each setting with strategies to support each child’s individual needs and also providing workshop sessions to parents and carers. The teacher will assess, plan, deliver, review and evaluate speech and language provision for identified children.

The postholder will also be required to work in collaboration with a speech and language therapist, and two speech and language teaching assistants to raise the standards of achievement for all children including using evidence – based assessments and interventions for children with SLCN.

Core Purpose

The teacher, with the support of the Principal, Vice Principal (Head of Primary) and Governing Body, will provide specialist teaching and professional guidance to secure high quality teaching and learning for all children with SLCN.

Main Responsibility

Teaching and learning

To:

  • lead INSET regarding all aspects of SLCN in our local nurseries.
  • work with the children within each nursery setting, nursery staff, teaching assistants, therapists and parents / carers to ensure realistic expectations of behaviour and achievement is set for children with SLCN;
  • support developments and initiatives to improve standards in literacy;
  • plan, deliver, review and evaluate, in liaison with colleagues the progress of the project and the impact on children’s SLCN.

The Person

Qualifications, skills and experience

The successful person will have:

  • a good honours degree or equivalent and a recognised teaching qualification (e.g. PGCE);
  • experience of teaching/working in early years/primary education;
  • qualifications in Special Educational Needs in particular Speech and Language;
  • good IT skills;
  • use of assessment data in particular assessments of SLCN;
  • strategies for raising achievement of pupils with SLCN;
  • the skills to communicate effectively, orally and in writing with other staff, pupils, parents/carers, governors, external agencies and the wider community.

Remuneration

We will pay a salary commensurate with the experience of the applicant.

We anticipate that this post will become permanent following a review of the success of the SLCN project.
