Speech and Visual Communications Class

Lesson Objective: The goal of the assignment is to demonstrate understanding of different ways to think about meaning in music; as we listen to songs, how does the use of language in music present that meaning.

Music Appreciation 101

A Listening Activity

Classroom Discussion

Six ways that music might have (or create) meaning:

1.  Emotion: Music may not be a language, but subtle emotional meaning.

2.  Individual pieces and types of music can acquire meaning through associations. For example; “means or symbolizes” something through association with feelings.

3.  Music can refer to an idea, it is not always about a “story”

4.  The meaning of the lyrics and words. The wording of music can significantly alter our perception of what the music means. The words of a song provide the context. Similarly, a title can radically change what we think a piece is about.

5.  Sung texts…the performance. Do the words sung mimic the music the musical gesture…how it is performed?

At the conclusion of this assignment the class will be asked to define what they learned about each member of the class through this activity. We used music to communicate … WHAT DID YOU HEAR?
