Laboratory Rules (Containment Level 2)

1. Access to the CL2 laboratory is strictly limited to authorised personnel. A list of authorised personnel with signatures is posted outside the laboratory.

2. Eating, chewing, drinking, smoking, applying cosmetics, storing of food and outdoor clothing in the laboratory is banned.

3. Mouth pipetting must not be used under any circumstances for any reason.

4. All workers in the laboratory must cover cuts and abrasions with a waterproof dressing.

5. Wash hands regularly and always before leaving the laboratory.

6. CL2 labelled laboratory coats must be worn at all times whilst in the laboratory and removed before leaving.

7. Sharps should not be used unless there is no alternative. If sharps are used then they must be placed directly in sharps bins for disposal.

8. In the event of gloves becoming damaged or grossly contaminated the gloves must be discarded, hands washed and new gloves put on. Disposable gloves must not be reused.

9. Blood must only be handled at the designated work station.

10. On completion of work the work station and all equipment must be disinfected.

11. Benches and safety hoods are to be disinfected and swabbed down every week (or according to 9 as appropriate).

12. Samples must be centrifuged in sealed safety buckets and where possible in ‘o’-ring sealed tubes.

13. All cultures of GM or level 2 organisms must be clearly labelled

14. All cultures of GM or level 2 organisms are to be opened only in the CL2 safety cabinets

15. All liquid waste materials must be made safe before disposal by addition of Trigene to 10%

16. All specimen containers, glassware and used equipment must be immersed in 10% Trigene for at least 2 hours before cleaning or disposal.

17. Surfaces must be disinfected with 10% Trigene following spillages (for large spills use Virkon granules). Bench tops must be disinfected after use.


18. Accidents:

i) In the event of an accident resulting in a wound immediately encourage it to bleed, wash thoroughly with soap and water but DO NOT SCRUB, cover with waterproof dressing.

ii) In the event of contamination of skin, conjunctivae or mucous membrane immediately wash thoroughly.

iii) Accidents must be reported to ......

iv) Any accidental exposure to airborne spores must be recorded in the accident log book. Any unexpected reaction to spores such as wheeze or skin wheal must be immediately reported to the head of laboratory
