As you may be aware, the new SouthGlasgowUniversityHospital and new RoyalHospital for Sick Children are due to open on the current Southern site early in 2015.
With this in mind, please note that positions based within the Victoria Infirmary, Mansionhouse Unit, the Western Infirmary and the current RoyalHospital for Sick Children at Yorkhill will change location and move to the new hospitals.
Gartnavel GeneralHospital and Glasgow Royal Infirmary will also have some services affected by moves to the new Hospitals.
These changes mean your base may change after joining us and you will be informed as soon as possible prior to any change of base.
1. SUMMARY INFORMATION
Post: specialty doctor IN OPHTHALMOLOGY

Applications are invited for the post of Specialty Doctor in Ophthalmology, to join our team based at InverclydeRoyalHospital, Greenock, part of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, following promotion of the existing postholder.
Applicants should have a strong General Ophthalmology background, preferably with an interest in Medical Retina. There is potential for other sub-specialty interests to be developed to complement service requirements.
The provisional job plan includes a weekly theatre session and five or six weekly clinic sessions involving general, medical retina and eye casualty patients. Fortnighly sessions include a pre-operative assessment clinic, an IVT injection list and an outreach clinic.
The post is based at InverclydeRoyalHospital, Greenock. There is a fortnightly outreach clinic in the nearby town of Largs and a weekly post-graduate education meeting at the Tennent Institute for Ophthalmology in Gartnavel GeneralHospital, Glasgow.
There is no on-call commitment for this post.
The post is full-time, although applications seeking part-time hours can be considered.
Applicants should possess full GMC registration, a license to practice and a minimum of 4 years’ (full time or equivalent) Postgraduate training, of which at least 2 years’ training must be within Ophthalmology.Possession of the FRCOphth is desirable but not essential. Non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training.
2. Brief Description of the Acute Services Division of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde
The Acute Division of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is the largest group of adult acute hospitals in Scotland. We provide a wide range of services from community-based care through to the full range of general hospital services.
There is a significant amount of complex surgical work carried out, as we are home to a number of the country’s tertiary and national services including heart and renal transplantation and cardiothoracic surgery. Glasgow is also home to the world famous Beatson oncology centre.
We enjoy close links with Glasgow’s three universities and make a significant contribution to teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Research also has a high profile within the organisation. Excellent facilities for students and their tutors are provided in the brand new, £15 million, state of the art, WolfsonMedicalSchool, based at GlasgowUniversity adjacent to the Western Infirmary site.
Employing more than 44,000 staff, we serve a core catchment population of 1.2 million. Our patients not only come from Greater Glasgow and Clyde but also, in some instances, from the whole of the West of Scotland and for our national services, from the whole of Scotland.
We have eight hospitals north of the River Clyde, all with teaching responsibilities: Glasgow Royal Infirmary (including Princess Royal Maternity Hospital), Western Infirmary, StobhillAmbulatoryCareHospital, Gartnavel GeneralHospital, GlasgowDentalHospital and School, DrumchapelHospital, BlawarthillHospital and LightburnHospital. South of the river are the Southern General Hospital, the Victoria Infirmary and the new VictoriaAmbulatoryCareHospital. The RoyalAlexandraHospital is in Paisley, the InverclydeRoyalHospital is in Greenock and the Vale of Leven District General Hospital is situated in Alexandria.
With an annual budget of over one billion pounds this is a particularly exciting time to be joining NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. Over the next decade there is planned investment of more than £750 million, this is the largest single investment programme in the history of NHS Scotland – giving NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde hospital accommodation for 21st Century health care.
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde plans to develop a new pattern of Accident & Emergency Services for Glasgow that will see:
- Specialist Accident & Emergency and Orthopaedic teams sited 24 hours a day at two centres of excellence – Glasgow Royal Infirmary and Southern General Hospital;
- New rapid access for GP emergency referrals; and
- Five Minor Injury Units staffed by nurse practitioners under the guidance of Accident & Emergency Consultants at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Gartnavel General Hospital, Southern General Hospital and at the Ambulatory Care Hospitals at Stobhill Hospital and the Victoria Infirmary.
As part of the Acute Services review, it has been decided that Ophthalmology in-patient services will be concentrated in Gartnavel GeneralHospital with services being delivered in a “hub and spoke” model.
3. Hospitals and Clinics where services are to be provided
InverclydeRoyalHospital
InverclydeRoyalHospital is a modern district general hospital providing a comprehensive range of services to its local population.
The Ophthalmology Department has a dedicated clinic area within the main outpatient department, in which a team of medical, nursing, optometric, orthoptic and photography staff provide a full range of clinic services. The clinic is well-equipped with laser, OCT and fundus camera.
The Ophthalmology Department has six operating sessions per week within the main theatre suite. Patients are admitted to a dedicated Ophthalmology Day Ward, which also undertakes pre-operative assessment clinics and has a clean treatment room for IVT injections.
Ophthalmology is able to admit inpatients to an adjacent ward area on an emergency or elective basis if required.
There is a Postgraduate Education Centre at the hospital, with full library facilities, lecture and seminar rooms.
Brooksby Clinic
A fortnightly ophthalmology clinic is held in Brooksby community health clinic in the Ayrshire town of Largs, 16 miles from InverclydeRoyalHospital.

There are a total of 36 consultant ophthalmologists in NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde, of whom 3 are based at InverclydeRoyalHospital, plus one of the consultants based at Royal Alexandra Hospital Paisley has a sessional commitment at IRH.

6. Education & Research
The Ophthalmology Department is proud of its reputation for training and has developed an enviable success rate in the College exams. The training provided includes induction, mentoring and regular assessment and appraisal as well as a comprehensive programme of in-house tutorials.
Senior and junior ophthalmologists have Wednesday afternoons set aside for Regional Postgraduate Teaching, which takes place at Gartnavel GeneralHospital. Regular participation in audit and clinical governance sessions will be expected. The programme allows time and space for clinical research, which is encouraged.
All members of the Department take part in monthly afternoon meetings at gartnavel General Hospital which act as a forum for discussion and presentation of audit, interesting case reports, morbidity and mortality, critical incidents, current journal articles and reports of recent meetings. A short divisional meeting is held where reports are gathered from the various interest groups and matters of concern can be raised.
InverclydeRoyalHospital has a Postgraduate Education Centre, with full library facilities, lecture and seminar rooms.
The successful candidate would be expected to ensure that they fulfil the requirements for continuing professional development. Study leave is provided.

Arrangements for leave and other absences must be approved by the Lead Clinician.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SERVICE
The conditions of service are those laid down and amended from time to time by the Hospital and Medical & Dental Whitley Council.

New Entrants to the NHS will normally commence on the minimum point of the salary scale, (dependent on qualifications and experience). Salary is paid monthly by Bank Credit Transfer.

SUPERANNUATION / New entrants to NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde who are aged sixteen but under seventy five will be enrolled automatically into membership of the NHS Pension Scheme. Should you choose to "opt out" arrangements can be made to do this via:
REMOVAL EXPENSES / Assistance with removal and associated expenses may be given and would be discussed and agreed prior to appointment.
