Job Description

NHS GREATER GLASGOW AND CLYDE

CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE’S SPECIALST SERVICES

FULL TIME SPECIALTY DOCTOR in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

Post based at Templeton Business Centre, Bridgeton, Glasgow.

CAMHS East Glasgow.

The East Glasgow Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) is a specialist NHS multidisciplinary team, consisting of Psychiatry, Psychology, Nursing, Psychotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language therapy (and trainees in those disciplines) administrative support and sessional input from other professionals such as Dietetics are also available.

Close liaison and collaboration with colleagues in Social Work Services and Education, as well as Community and Voluntary Agencies, are key to joint practice and providing for the needs of the children, young people, parents and carers, with whom we work.

CAMHS’ primary function is to provide outpatient health input to the mental health needs of children and young people, 0 – 18, in East Glasgow, Cambuslang and Rutherglen. We serve a combined population of around 240,000. Although diverse, all districts have areas of social and material deprivation, high unemployment, mental health problems in parents, substance misuse and all the inherent health and social problems associated with people living in such circumstances.

Most referrals come from GPs but CAMHS welcome referral from other medical sources and appreciate the support and input of colleagues in any relevant field. For further information about the range and complexity of mental health difficulties CAMHS may work with, go to:

http://www.rcpsych.ac.uk/mentalhealthinfoforall/youngpeople.aspx.

The main focus of work is the assessment and treatment of moderate to severe mental health problems in children and young people aged 0-18 years old living within our catchment area. Support and care is given to children, young people and their families and other professionals involved in their well being. Most duties are carried out in an out patient setting, following the Choice and Partnership Approach (CAPA) model.

A large proportion of our work involves the assessment and treatment of children and young people with ADHD and other neurodevelopmental conditions.

A recent audit of work has led to a clearer picture of the quantity of medical time (specific partnership time) required to see these children and young people. All members of the team are involved in the initial assessment and follow up of these children but a newly designed nurse led ADHD service is now being established to review and support those who require longer term follow up. Our speciality doctor would play an active role in this care pathway.

The East Glasgow team has 3 part time consultant psychiatry posts. Dr. Thrower 0.7wte Dr. Arthur 0.8wte and Dr. Young 0.6wte.

There are also routinely core trainee psychiatrists on rotational placement.

There are currently 3 other Speciality Doctor working in other out patient teams within GG&C. This new post has been developed because of an increase in referrals and patient numbers over the last few years.

The staff aim to provide high quality mental health care for children and adolescents, meeting the requirements outlined in the following documents:-

1.  The Patient’s Charter

2.  The Children in Hospital Charter

3.  The Children ( Scotland ) Act 1995
