Commonly Asked ELA Questions and Answers for Grades 9-12

Curriculum

  1. How many units will we engage in next year?

The number of units for each grade varies. For 9th grade, there are 4 units. For 10th grade, there are 6 units. For 11th and 12th grades, there are 5 units.

  1. What are the names of the units?

A full outline of the HS ELA units is in the Appendix.

Materials

  1. What texts (trade books/novels) are used in these units?

A full outline of the HS ELA units is in the Appendix.

  1. What are the major changesin grades9-12for the 2018-2019 school year?

This year, there are two major changes to the HS ELA curriculum. Two new units from the LearnZillion resource are being added. In grade 9, the To Kill a Mockingbird Unit was replaced with the Hope, Despair, and Memory Unit. In grade 11, the Hamlet Unit was replaced with the Our Town Unit. In addition, all students and teachers will be provided with access to the full LearnZillion ELA Platform.

  1. When will we receive the materials?

Printed student materials that accompany LearnZillion will arrive at schools during the week of May 14, 2018. The 12th grade research module 12.3 and the 11th grade Our Town novels will arrive at schools after the start of the 2018-2019 school year.

  1. Will ESL and SPED teachers receive 9-12EL materials?

All teachers, including ESL and SPED, will receive login credentials for the new LearnZillion Platform and will be able to use this tool to plan and support students.

  1. What 9-12materials can we expect for the 2018-19 school year?

Schools will receive printed student packets for each student in each grade for Learnzillion. Additionally, schools will receive a copy of PCG Paths module 12.3 for each 12th grade student. Schools will also receive one copy of Our Town for each 11th grade student.

Close Out

  1. What is the message regarding close out (collection of materials/accountability)?

Schools should collect and inventory all ELA materials by grade level per unit. In this way the materials that will be reused in the upcoming school year will be accounted for and ready for redistribution.

  1. What is consumable?

The only materials that are consumable are the printed student workbooks. All trade books are non-consumable and should be collected and inventoried.
