Academic Focus
Reading/ELA:
In this unit, students immerse themselves in the world of poetry, a genre that carries enormous power in small packages. Students learn to pay close attention to poetic techniques; poetry necessitates that readers think about how the author’s language and structural decisions impact the meaning of the poem.
Mathematics:
Our focus will shift to division over the next few weeks while continuing to work on multiplication. We have begun a “Multiplication Challenge” amongst the homerooms to ramp up the emphasis on knowing their facts. Additionally, we have started to use Dream Box, a computer program, as part of our group rotations. This program is meant to fortify and extend skills in all areas of mathematics. Your children may also access Dream Box at home.
Content:
We will continue our science unit about Energy. We will be learning about magnetism and then onto electromagnets.

Computer Programs:
Your child has been and will be introduced to various computer programs purchased by the school district. Your child can use these programs at home. He or she just needs to access them through the school district website and go to library links. Some programs will require your child to use his/her username and password that he/she has been given.
Some of the programs they have been introduced to are MyOn, Imagine Learning, Dream Box and Think Cerca.

Donations:
We are looking for donations of gloves and mittens for 4th grade students. As the weather turns cold, we hope that all of our students will be able to dress appropriately for the winter. / Homework This Week:
Because it is a short week, students will only receive a reading log for homework. That means no vocabulary homework will be coming home.
Mr. Seidman says students may use the books from the MyOn computer program for their reading logs.
Please check with your child to see if he or she has any Math classwork that needs to be finished at home.
Book Orders:
New book orders will go home today. They will be due Friday, January 19th.
If you want to order online, go to the Scholastic Books website and use the class code is DZ383.

Dates to Remember:
Jan. 11th PTO meeting @ 7 p.m.
Jan. 15th Martin Luther King, Jr. Day—No school
Jan. 26th Superintendent’s Conference Day
Fridays are school spirit days. To show school spirit, your child can wear a shirt that says the school name or wear blue and yellow.

Thank You!
Our field trip to the Onondaga Nation Arena was a huge success. Thanks so much to the families that were able to support the trip by donating extra funds and by chaperoning the trip. Everyone had a lot of fun!
Food in the classrooms:
·  We do celebrate birthdays but we ask that the food items are easy to hand out like cookies, cupcakes or popsicles.
·  Please let us know ahead of time that you will be bringing in something to celebrate so we can plan with you a time that will work for both you and your child’s schedule.
·  Also, no nuts or peanut butter due to allergies
·  No sunflower seeds
Happy New Year!
May 2018 Bring All of You Good Health and Happiness! / Box Tops:
