Academic Focus
Reading/ELA:
Students use the overarching theme of belonging to explore nuanced ideas of loneliness, acceptance, and character change. Students have several opportunities to read closely in order to uncover author’s choices and how those impact the meaning of the text.
Mathematics:
We will be utilizing our understanding of place value to learn how to round out to the millions place. This is an important skill for using estimation. Please start working on committing your multiplication tables to memory.
Content:
This week we will be learning about geography, specifically about New York State. / Field Trip:
We are going on a field trip to the M.O.S.T. to conduct science activities.
Please make sure that the permission slip is signed and turned in by September 25th. There is no cost for this trip. However, we will be eating lunch there so students can either eat a school bagged lunch or bring their own bagged lunch (no glass containers). We just need to know by Tuesday if students need a school lunch. Also, students should wear socks because they will be taking off their shoes for one of the activities.
Homework:
Your child has been given a packet that includes a reading log and vocabulary homework. This packet is to be completed this week and returned on Friday. A quiz will be given on Vocabulary on Friday which will assess the understanding of the word. This week’s words support the book Because of Winn Dixie which is being read in ELA class. Math will be given out as needed throughout the week.
Reading Challenge:
The fourth grade will be taking part in Otto’s reading challenge. It will be a part of your child’s daily reading homework. When your child meets the reading goal, he/she will be eligible for a free ticket to a football game in November and then your family can order tickets for $10 per person. / Book Orders:
Your child has received a book order. The directions for ordering are included. Please check the due date.
Reading Groups:
We will be giving various assessments this week to give us more information about your child’s reading abilities. Then students will be assigned according to what they need to help them grow as readers. / Dates to Remember:
