Specialist for Linux and Data Storage

The Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) is happy to announce a job vacancy for Specialist for Linux and Data Storage.

Skoltech is unique international institution polarized around science, engineering and technology will eventually be home to 200 faculty, 300 post-doctoral researcher and 1,200 graduate students.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Supports and maintains computing cluster of the Institute in general and specifically for the data storage part;
  • Monitors the status of the storage facilities, the equipment of the computing cluster in general and specifically the storage; fixes problems with data access;
  • Oversees the service contracts for equipment and software of computing cluster in general and specifically for the storage facility;
  • Works with the user community to respond to the problems with data access and finds ways to provide solutions for user requests;
  • Manages the installation/ removal of server, storage and the support equipment, performs documenting of changes;
  • Architects the hardware/software solution and takes part in the selection of the appropriate equipment;
  • Maintains working knowledge of the trends in the storage technology and takes the expert and the advisory role for projects that address future technologies;
  • Takes part in the projects and workgroups to implement new services and improve the quality and functionality of the operations;
  • Takes part in developing the back-up schemes, provides setting up and supports backup systems and recover data on necessity;
  • Assists in installing and setting up software and applications for scientific activities in general and specifically for all aspects related to data usage and storage.

Qualification requirements.

  • At least 3 years exposed to Linux computing clusters with centralized file system resources;
  • Understanding of the architectural aspects of Peta-Byte size storage systems; near-line as well as off-line for the “lights-off” operational requirements;
  • Experience in designing and implementing data storage systems including hybrid systems and all-flash systems from leading manufacturers (IBM, HPE, NetApp, etc.);
  • Experience in configuring and supporting RAID arrays and network attached storage;
  • Understanding of the File Systems and Cluster File Systems (eg. Lustre);
  • Experience in maintaining storage equipment;
  • Experience with the back-up systems, back-up policies and the requirements for saving data;
  • Experience with near-line and off-line storage from leading manufacturers (IBM, Quantum);
  • Experience benchmarking, monitoring and trouble-shooting storage systems;
  • Experience with the installation and commissioning storage equipment;
  • Deep knowledge of Linux systems at command level and understanding of Linux programming;
  • Deep knowledge of compute cluster architecture;
  • Knowledge of the details of the procedure for setting up computer clusters and the online/offline storage systems;
  • Process of writing scripts for Linux system;
  • Certification in aspects of the Linux Operating System; certification from leading storage manufacturers courses is an advantage;
  • Fluent English.

The successful candidate will be paid a competitive compensation package commensurate with the important responsibilities of this role in delivering Skoltech project plan.
