What is Southern Befrienders?

Southern Befrienders is a Manx Registered Charity based in Port Erin that supports older men and women with volunteer befrienders in the southern communities of the Isle of Man, including Castletown and Ballasalla. We currently have 115 service users who live in the south of the Island. Many of them live alone, but we also support couples and most live independently in their own homes, but we also visit those living in sheltered accommodation. We have nearly 130 volunteers, made up of Befrienders, those that help with social outings and fundraising activities and the Board. About 35 of our Befrienders are students from Castle Rushen High School. Befrienders visit our service users on a regular basis for a cuppa and a chat.

This statement is at the heart of all our work.

We need £40,000 each year to run our service, so our Special Events Team is essential in ensuring that we can continue to support older people in our local community.

What is the Special Events (Fundraising)Team?

Our team of fundraisers coordinate fun events like coffee mornings, concerts, film nights, etc., to raise much needed funds to run our core service. We also have flag days and bucket collections throughout the year. And we are always open to new suggestions of events to raise money!

What are the benefits of joining the Special Events (Fundraising) Team?

You will be making a real difference to the lives of local, older people by ensuring the sustainability of Southern Befrienders. You will make new friends, develop new skills like event organisation, cash handling, teamwork, etc., and hopefully have some fun along the way!

What can you do to help?

As a member of our Special Events Team

  • You would attend a planning meeting with the other team members once a month to plan events and allocate tasks.
  • You would attend events, playing an essential role in the smooth running of the event, selling raffle tickets, setting up and clearing up, making and serving refreshments, etc.

What training and support will you receive as a volunteer?

Once you decide to volunteer for Southern Befrienders, you will have an informal meeting with us to explain more about the role. You will need to complete the application form and start a police check process.

You will attend induction training, when you will receive a useful pack of information.

What skills do you need to have?

No particular skills or experience – but enthusiasm and a willingness to get involved and the commitment to attend a meeting once a month and as many of the events as possible throughout the year will make your volunteering experience even more enjoyable.

Police Checks/CRB

We need two references and obtain a full police check for all our volunteers – participation can only commence once these are in place. If you have any concerns about this or want more details please contact us in confidence.
