January 14, 2004

Dear Teacher,

Speaking for the faculty of the School of Education as a whole, thank you for agreeing to work with a cadet education student from The Citadel. We believe that these “real-life” experiences are crucial for the preparation of our future teachers. These teacher candidates engage in a variety of incremental practicum experiences in which they progress from observations to actual classroom teaching. The expectations for this particular course are outlined on the Practicum Expectations Form (a “green” form) which the teacher candidate will share with you.

During this course, Education 306: Teaching Reading in Content Areas, Secondary Schools, the candidate will be required to complete a carefully outlined set of exercises, observations, and activities. Your cadet understands the responsibilities and requirements for the successful completion of the practicum. This particular course requires students to participate in 10 contact hoursof field experiences and is to be completedby April 15, 2004.

We appreciate your cooperation in working with this teacher candidate to meet the requirements for these field experiences. We realize that you have a busy schedule; therefore, please accept our sincere thank you for the extra time you are taking to work with us. We truly believe that the public schools will benefit as prospective teachers will be coming into their first teaching experience with more firsthand knowledge of life in a classroom. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call me at 953-5019 (my office) or at 953-5097 (School of education).

Sincerely

Stephenie M. Hewett, Ed.D.

Assistant Professor

PROCEDURES FOR FIELD EXPERIENCES

In completing the in-school practicum experiences for this course, you will be under the direction of Dr. Stephenie Hewett.

Initially, you will attend classes and begin the field experiences in Mid-January. The official forms distributed to you will eventually be retained in your permanent file when fully completed.

The steps listed below are to be followed when completing the practicum’s in-school, field experiences for EDUC 306: Teaching Reading in the Content Areas: Secondary Schools:

  1. Obtain the appropriate forms from the professor.

You have choices for your field experiences:

1.Students are required to participate in a Field Experience for 10 hours. Students will be required to participate in 2 GEAR UP Academies. The Saturdays in the semester are January 10, January 24, February 13, February 28, March 12, March 20, and April 17 and the times are from 8:30 to 12:30AM. You will select 2 team members (group size of 3) based on certification area. You will be assigned a SC Standard for the assigned grade level (7th, 8th/9th, 10th/11th) to develop an objective for a lesson. The three of you will develop the lesson and present it on the Thursday class before the Academy.
A GEAR UP Saturday Academy consists of 3 classes. Each one of the group members will teach 1 of those classes with the lesson that the group developed. The other 2 group members will serve as facilitators. A facilitator monitors the room, distributes supplies, collects paper, answers questions, and helps students with individual problems. After each class, a discussion will occur between the teacher and facilitators and changes to the lesson, if necessary, will take place during the next class.
Students will present to the class the group's lesson plan for the Saturday Academy on the class day before the academy. The lesson plans will also be submitted to Dr. Hewett in writing that same day. Students are also responsible for keeping a journal of the teaching experiences during the field experience. The journal entries include the day, time, grade level of students, and a description of the activities. The journal should also include a self-assessment of the lesson that you presented. The self-assessment should not only critique the teacher presentation part, but the lesson plan itself as well as the student response to the lesson. Suggestions for improvement should also be included in the journal.

  1. Students are required to attend 1 meeting of a professional organization, departmental meeting at a local school, and/or the friends of the library presentation of English writer's and scholars. Students are to write a reflection paper on what they learned from the attended professional meeting.
  2. When you visit GEAR UP each time, show the cooperating teacher each of the following:
  3. Letter to the Cooperating Teacher
  4. Practicum Expectations Forms (the “green forms)
  5. Procedures for Practicum Experiences (this sheet)
  6. Practicum Registration Form (the “blue” form)
  7. Cooperating Teacher Field Experience Evaluation Form (the “yellow” forms)

Return all forms to Dr. Hewett by April 15, 2004.

  1. Complete all sections of the Practicum Registration Form (the “blue”

form) and obtain all the necessary signatures (cooperating teacher,

principal of the school or school contact person). Return the form to Dr.

Hewett by April 15, 2004. This form serves as an official record of

placement in a field experience for EDUC 306 Teaching Reading in the

Content Areas – Secondary Schools and MUST be returned.

  1. Complete all of the field experience requirements. When you finish the

field experience requirements, be sure that you have completed all

activities on both sides of the Practicum Expectations Forms (the “green”

forms) and that the cooperating teacher has initialed and dated each

activity to indicate your completion. When returned to Dr. Hewett, this

form will be placed in your permanent file and will serve as a record of

each of your field experiences. All portions of the field experiences

must be completed to pass the course.

At the end of each practicum, you will be asked to complete a “Student

Evaluation of the Experience” Form (the “pink” form) on each experience.

Throughout the practicum experiences, you will be discussing your observations, reactions, and suggestions during class time. Dr. Hewett will be available during all GEAR UP activities.
