UNIT TITLE / Prepare surfaces for plastering
APPLICATION / This unit specifies the skills and knowledgerequired to prepare surfaces to accept a new skin of lining materials.
It applies to those preparing surfaces for plastering in the construction industry. It includes planning and preparing for work, identifying, selecting, using and storing plastering tools and equipment, and following workplace and health and safety and emergency procedures.
It supports those working alone and under supervision as a member of a team.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this Unit at the time of publication.

1. / Prepare for job. / 1.1 / Identify scope of preparing surfaces plastering job requirements and confirm with supervisor.
1.2 / Identify and interpret workplace health and safety (WHS) and environmental policies and procedures.
1.3 / Identify hazards and assess risks and apply control risks measures.
1.4 / Select and use personal protective equipment (PPE).
1.5 / Identify signage and barricade requirements to isolate protect the work area and install accordingly.
2. / Prepare surface. / 2.1 / Move required materials to the job location and prepare for use.
2.2 / Examine site inspection, plans and specifications to identify surface preparation requirements.
2.3 / Remove hazards, obstructions and attachments to create a safe work area.
2.4 / Identify and select required tools and equipment, check for serviceability, and rectify or report faults.
2.5 / Identify required materialsand calculate quantities needed to complete the job.
3. / Patch and fill holes and depressions. / 3.1. / Identify and select patching method to suittype of material surface, size of hole, compatibility of materials and planned finish.
3.2. / Identify and select patching materials to suit material surface.
3.3 / Measure and mix patching materials to manufacturer instructions.
3.4 / Fill holes and depressions using patching materials in accordance with manufacturer instructions.
3.5 / Brush and wash surface, and remove surplus material.
3.6 / Seal patched area with primer or sealing coat to meet job requirements.

In doing this, the person must:

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must have knowledge of:
- workplace health and safety (WHS) requirements applicable to preparing surfaces for plastering
- environmental requirements applicable to preparing surfaces for plastering, including, clean-up management dust and noise, stormwater protection, vibration and waste management
- workplace requirements for preparing surfaces for plastering, including interpreting scope of work requirements and reporting problems
- workplace requirements for safely preparing surfaces for plastering, including hazard identification and risk control, Job Safety Analysis (JSA), safe work method statements and Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
- types, characteristics, uses, limitations and workplace requirements for safe use of tools and equipment, including brooms, brushes, buckets, chisels, filling blades, hammers, power grinders, power sanders, sanding blocks, scrapers, shovels, sponges, trowels, elevated work platforms, hoses, ladders, planks, trestles and water sprayers
- types, characteristics, uses, limitations and safe handling of surface preparation materials, including caulking compounds, cellulose and plaster, lime putty, plaster, proprietary fillers, sand and cement, and sheet material
- types, characteristics, uses and limitations of surfaces including timber, plasterboard and plaster glass, masonry, brick, metal (ferrous and non-ferrous), concrete and solid plaster
- techniques for checking tools and equipment and workplace requirements for rectifying and reporting faults

ASSESSMENT CONDITIONS
Assessors must satisfy the requirements for assessors contained in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations.
Assessment of performance must be undertaken in the workplace or in a simulated workplace environment. Tasks are to be performed to the level of proficiency and within the time limits that are to be expected in a workplace.
Assessors are responsible for ensuring that candidates have access to current industry-standard:

- relevant legislation, regulatory standards and codes
