Grade 12 IB Biology Summer Assignment

Dear IB Biology Student,

Congratulations you are half way through the IB Biology curriculum! Next year, we will be covering various topics in the human body as well as plant science for higher-level students.

Your assignment this summer is composed of these parts:

  1. IA plan
  2. Human body (SL and HL)
  3. Plant questions (HL only)
  4. Review (SL and HL)

Part 1: IA Plan

Pick a topic we have studied this year or will study next year and design an experiment for it. Please read the IA booklet handed out in class to help you come up with an idea. Use the design proposal template document in this packet to submit your idea to me. I will collect this proposal on the first day back to school.

Part 2: Human Body (SL and HL)

Important Note:Please use your OWN words for this assignment.

Both SL and HL

  1. For each of the following body systems, write down 3 questions that you want to know more about. These should be things you are wondering about not questions you find on the Internet.

-Digestive System

-Circulatory/Cardiovascular System

-Respiratory System

-Immune System

-Endocrine System

-Nervous System

-Muscular System

-Reproductive System

-Excretory System

  1. Find out more about one of the body systems above and come up with a presentation tool to present the information. You can do a brochure, movie, PowerPoint, podcast, or any other method of presentation.

Part 3: Plants (HL only)

  1. Draw AND label the diagrams of the following:

-The distribution of tissues in the stem and leaf of a dicotyledonous plant.

-The structure of a dicotyledonous animal-pollinated flower.

-The external and internal structure of a named dicotyledonous seed.

  1. State five differences between the structure of dicotyledonous and monocotyledonous plants.
  2. What is transpiration? Explain how water is carried by the transpiration stream, including the structure of xylem vessels, transpiration pull, cohesion, adhesion and evaporation.
  3. Explain how xerophytes have adapted to reduce transpiration.
  4. If you were to design an IA related to plant science, what would you do?

Part 4: Review (SL and HL)

Review the material we have covered this year. Go back and try to answer the questions that you have taken on previous quizzes and tests without looking at the answers.
