This course is a continuation of the Spanish language and reinforces the skills of listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Grammar and vocabulary are heavily stressed, and emphasis is placed on enabling students to communicate in daily life situations. Communication is the main goal.

Student Outcomes:

Among other things, by the end of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. use Spanish to carry on daily routines in the classroom
  2. talk about daily routines both in and out of school, going places, and running errands
  3. write and speak in more complex sentences that are grammatically correct in the present and past tense
  4. identify well-known Hispanic people, places, and things
  5. identify, understand, and celebrate Hispanic customs, holidays, and food

Student Responsibilities and Expectations:

  • All textbooks must have a cover by the end of the first week of school. A book check is conducted every day for a daily grade. For full credit each day, you must have your book with you in class, and it must be covered. As book checks are conducted periodically for a homework grade, failure to bring the textbook to class will affect your daily grade, your participation grade, and your final grade.
  • Students are expected to come to class on time, to be seated in their assigned seats, and be ready to learn with all required materials when the tardy bell rings. The tardy bell signifies the beginning

of class.

  • All backpacks, book bags, sports bags, purses, and other such carrying items must be placed next to the bookcase or under the computer counter, during class. Coats, sweatshirts, hoodies, etc. must be either worn as they are intended or put away with the backpacks. Nothing may be in your lap for the duration of the class period.
  • Do NOTinterruptinstruction to ask to leave the classroom unless you have a genuine emergency. You must wait until quiet work is assigned or until the end of the class period.
  • As it is important that you be in the classroom to receive instruction, you will be allowed a minimal, reasonablenumber of bathroom visits.
  • No student is permitted at any point to put his/her head down in this class.
  • You MUST have you OWN agenda, with YOUR OWN name on the front name page, to leave the classroom, i.e. to use the restroom. If you lose your agenda, you must purchase a new one from the office.
  • You may not go to your locker during class time. Bring all required and needed materials with you.
  • The classroom sometimes stays on the cooler side. You may want to keep a sweater or sweatshirt in your bag in case you are chilled in class.
  • A separate loose-leaf notebook kept specifically for this class, loose-leaf paper, pen (only blue or black ink will be accepted) or pencil, thetextbook, workbook, and other related materials are to be brought to each class session. Notebooks are checked regularly for a grade according to the notebook organization requirements. Organization is important!
  • The use of Internet translation sites for assignments is strictly forbidden. Aside from the fact that the product that these sites give you is usually incorrect and inaccurate, these sites do not help you to learn and absorb the language. Using these sites is considered a violation of the KWHS Honor Code and will be dealt with according to the school/county policy regarding such violation.
  • Plagiarism is also a serious violation of the Honor Code and will be dealt with according to the school/county policy regarding such violation.
  • Application or use of cosmetics, lotions, perfumes, hair products, or any type of grooming or hair styling is prohibited in the classroom. These items will be confiscated if they are used in the classroom.
  • Chewing gum is also prohibited in the school and classroom.

Homework

  • Homework is to be turned in ON TIME, at the time that it is due. Late or incomplete homework is never accepted. Please refer to the school policy regarding the makeup of assignments missed due to absence.
  • Only homework, tests, quizzes, and any other work done in blue or black ink or pencil is accepted.

Work done in other colors will be returned to you ungraded and unaccepted.

  • It is thestudent’s responsibility to see me about making up any missed assignments, quizzes, ortests from an excused absence. Work missed due to an absence is recorded as a zero grade until it is made up. Class policy is that you have 5 school days to make up an assignment, quiz, or test missed due to an excused absence. You will be held to this policy and it is your responsibility to arrange a makeup time with me. You will not be permitted to make up work that you missed due to an unexcused absence or tardy.
  • If you are absent on a date that a project is due, and you were PRESENT on the day the due date was announced/assigned, you are still responsible for the activity or assignment on the previously announced/given due date.
  • Students are to remain in their assigned seats at all times unless permission is given to move about. The bell does not dismiss you. The teacher dismisses you.
  • Interactive activities, discussions, and cooperative learning are essential components of the class. Students are expected to participate fully in all oral activities, partnerships, and discussions.
  • Students who complete all their homework on a regular basis will have the opportunity to correct low quizzes and receive a higher score. It is the responsibility of the students to schedule a time to do corrections. ALL corrections must be completed within five school days from the completion of the quiz in class.
  • Give respect, receive respect. Treat others as you would wish to be treated. Take responsibility and make good choices!

Grading Policy:

Grading Policy:Quizzes will be frequent and sporadic. Tests will always be worth at least 100 points and will be announced at least two days in advance. Oral assessments will occur frequently and will be scored with an oral rubric. Notebooks will be checked each marking period at least once, but may be checked at any time, so notebooks should always be neat, organized and complete. Class projects are due on time, and are scored with a project rubric. No extra credit work is assigned, as students who are completing all regular work should be doing well in the class.
