Spanish 1 and 2 Syllabus

Course Descriptions:

  • Spanish 1is an introductory course designed for students with little or no previous knowledge of Spanish.
  • This course teaches basic language patterns and vocabulary. It also introduces some culture.
  • It is taught through the skills of listening, reading, writing, and speaking.
  • Students will learn to understand the Spanish language as it is spoken at a basic level and to communicate with simple verbal or written responses.
  • Spanish sounds will be learned through repetition.
  • Basic grammar and sentence structure will be taught in basic, everyday vocabulary.
  • Basic cultural themes of the Spanish-speaking world will be introduced throughout the course.
  • Spanish 2 is a continuation of the learning acquired in Spanish 1.
  • Students will be required to use the target language in class daily.
  • Spanish 2 will include a stronger emphasis on speaking, listening, reading and writing, as well as humanities concepts such as the visual arts, music and dance.
  • Students will continue to study the culture and lifestyles of many Spanish-speaking countries and their residents.

Learning Targets:

At the end of both Spanish 1 and Spanish 2 courses, students will be able to:

-improve skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing;

-communicate in Spanish, practice pronunciation and use present and past tenses;

-read and understand short stories and authentic texts written in simple Spanish;

-understand simple questions in Spanish and respond appropriately; understand teacher directions/stories.

-form questions and statements to communicate about the present and past.

Textbooks to be used:

-for Spanish 1: Así se dice Level 1 (blue)

-forSpanish 2: Así se dice Level 2 (red)

Grading Guidelines:

- 60% Major Grades

40% Daily Grades

Homework, if graded, will be included in daily grades.

- All late work will be penalized as follows:

-10 points off for the 1st day

-20 points off for the 2nd day

-30 points off for the 3rd day

-After 4 days late, the grade will NOT be higher

than a 50%.

-Students not completing the work will be given the opportunity to complete work through mandatory before/after school tutorials or during DEN if not in RTI.

-Students have three school days to retake a failing minor grade after given the opportunity of relearning.

-Students will receive the highest grade of the two on minor assignments retaken.

-Students have five school days to retake a failing major grade after given the opportunity of relearning.

-Students will receive no higher than a 70% on retake of major grades.

Testing Days:

Mondays and Thursdays

Quizzes can be given any day of the week.

Tutoring Days and Times:

Tuesdays and Thursdays 8:25-8:55 am

Wednesdays 4:25-4:55 pm
