Southeast Asian Specialist
This position provides advocacy and case management for clients and empowers client to learn self-advocacy over time. You will be responsible for responding to specific needs of victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault victims and providing community education and outreach to the Hmong community in Sheboygan County.
You must be able to represent the mission, values and philosophy of Safe Harbor to program participants, employees, and the general public. You are required to model and promote attitudes of non-violence, anti-oppression, inclusiveness, and power-sharing in all facets of position responsibilities, especially when working with community partners. Be an outspoken voice against violence against women and children, teen dating violence, sexual assault, rigid gender roles, and norms of masculinity within the community through conversation, trainings, social media, and one-on-one conversations.
PRIMARY DUTIES:
-Assist with development and implementation of a robust Hmong advocacy program for Safe Harbor, including outcome evaluation
-Coordinate advocacy and support for residents, serving as the primary advocate for Hmong speaking resident and non-resident clients. This includes crisis intervention, advocacy, life skills training, parenting support, information and referrals, safety planning and goal setting for victims and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault
-Assists victims with systems advocacy; securing needed resources by providing information, referral, advocacy, translating; interpreting and accompaniment when needed
-Assist with legal advocacy including, but not limited to restraining orders, custody, divorce, and immigration.
-As needed, provide support to 24-hour hotline as specified by the staff rotation schedule and respond, when needed, to the shelter, hospitals, court or advocacy center anytime during those shifts
-Respond to service requests of Hmong victims/survivors on an on-call basis
-Facilitate Hmong speaking women’s support group
-Provide support, positive role modeling; structure, and assist to manage and resolve group dynamics of resident, children and families in shelter
-Provides trainings, educational workshops and other awareness raising events to different groups throughout Sheboygan County on domestic violence, sexual assault and the Hmong Community
-Represent the agency at community meetings/functions through participation in collaborative meetings and community outreach presentations
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
• Ability to communicate in both English and Hmong fluently
• Have strong understanding of Hmong culture and willingness to work on issues of domestic violence and sexual assault within the Hmong culture.
• Must have strong verbal and written communication skills in both English and Hmong
• Experience working with sexual or domestic violence issues, working with youth, and providing victim and systems advocacy preferred
• Experience in working with people from diverse cultural, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds and lifestyles.
