Prerequisites : Nil ( it is strongly recommended that student should take Text and Information Management in year 10 to maximise their chances of achieving well at level 1)

Overview

Text and Information Management (TIM) is defined as the “process of creating and manipulating words and images (text and illustrations)”. It is divided into two skill areas or strands:

Text Entry is defined as the efficient use of technology to enable students to develop the skill of entering words and numbers (text) using an alpha-numeric keyboard, applying the principles of safe working practices (correct finger and body placement). The emphasis is on the development of an automatic response to key location so that students can focus on the text being processed.

Information Management is defined as the process of editing and communicating information which is clear, accurate, logical and concise. This involves students making choices as to the organisation of words and images (text, illustrations and graphics), the changes required, layout, appropriate software and the management of their files.

Managing personal computer system is demonstrated knowledge of the hardware and software of a personal computer system. Complete basic operation and maintenance procedures for a personal computer system.

Use computer technology to present a topic design a presentation about a topic, gather information for a presentation of a topic using computer applications, create a presentation of a topic using computer applications, and present a topic using computer applications.

Aims

Students will use a computer to:

  • develop and consolidate the skill of entering text (words and numbers) using an alpha-numeric keyboard and demonstrating safe working practices
  • communicate information and ideas by direct entry
  • access, plan and manage information in order to communicate rapidly and effectively
  • process information by manipulating and reshaping words and images in order to produce a document fit for the purpose and the intended audience
  • Demonstrate and apply knowledge of a personal computer system
  • Use technology to present a topic

Learning Outcomes

Students should be able to:

  • use and apply computer functions and applications

Format for the assessment for all achievement standards

Common assessment tasks (CATs) for Achievement Standards 90034, 90035 and 90036 will be delivered during normal class time during the two-weeks immediately preceding the 2010 examination timetable period. A minimum of four hours computer time should be provided to candidates during this fortnight to complete the CATs.

The format will be similar to the CATs set for standards 90034, 90035 and 90036 in 2009.

Equipment to bring

Candidates will be using computers for these assessments and will have access to:

  • software that allows the requirements of the achievement standards to be met
  • a storage medium for candidates to save work to during the assessment
  • a printer
  • an English dictionary, either hard copy or on-line.

The choice of hardware or software offered for candidate use is at the discretion of each individual school.

Special notes

There is no requirement to block candidate access to email or Internet facilities.

Printing of candidate answers for the CATs may take place at any time during the two-week examination period. At the end of the two weeks, only the tasks the candidate wishes to have marked should be submitted.

All candidate work that has been printed out for marking must be deleted from the storage medium upon completion of the CATs.

Any candidate work submitted without a printed National Student Number (NSN) will not be accepted for marking.

Any candidate answer booklet that does not have a signed declaration of authenticity on the front cover will also not be accepted for marking.

Authenticity

Schools are responsible, through their policies and procedures, for authenticating candidate work. Each school is required to have procedures in place for ensuring the work of each candidate is the candidate's own. NZQA will require candidates to authenticate their own work and that schools provide notification of any school incidents during the delivery of the CATs which may affect the authenticity of candidates' work.

Additional information

A circular, including the instructions for the management of the three Information Management CATs, will be sent to schools in September 2010.

Your Guide to Assessment in Text and Information Management

Assessment will consist of a mixture of tests and assignments conducted during this year based on the learning outcomes stated above. Assessments are used to determine progress against achievement standards, to report progress to parents and students and to gather data for class prizes and awards. In the event of compassionate consideration school marks may be used to predict NCEA credits so students should assume that all assessment actually counts.

Retention of Student work

Student internal assessment material will be retained by the department, as it may be required for moderation purposes.

Student Obligations
  1. Ensure you understand the assessment programme and policy
  2. Check thoroughly the accuracy of the assessment by teachers when work is returned
  3. Ensure you understand the requirements of each assessment being completed
  4. Discuss problems/concerns with the Teacher/HOD
Homework expectations

We want you to develop sound work habits. Your parents can assist in this development by helping you organise your homework. Although there may be times when no work has been set formally, as a student you should use this as an opportunity to revise techniques you are not sure of, or to complete research requirements for future or current briefs.

At this level students should be completing on average 30 minutes per night per subject.

Your parents have a key role to play in ensuring you are given the opportunity to complete regular homework. At senior levels you should expect to have homework to be completed every night. You should be wary if you find yourself saying to your parents you have nothing to do.

Homework includes:

  • reading
  • completing work started in class
  • completing projects or assignments
  • learning the terms, language and important facts associated with computing
  • preparing for new work, i.e. completing research for design briefs
  • revising practical exercises where new techniques are not well understood
  • revising for class tests.

To help with homework your parents can assist by:

  • taking an interest in homework
  • helping you to plan the use of your time effectively
  • checking your homework diary once a week
  • providing a quiet room, a straight chair, a table and a good light.

Resources

The main text books used in this course will be:

  • Cyberkeys – Year 11 information Technology by Elizabeth Todd

  • Quick and Easy Keyboarding - Keyboard using the ABC technique by Vonnie Alexander
  • The Non-Designer’s Design Book by Robin Williams
  • Instant Unit Standards
  • Adobe Design books and softwares with Natcoll Creating Features

The following web sites will provide useful additional information.

http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/

Most resources will be available to you as photocopied sheets, booklets and available on the class website.

Assessment

Internal Assessment

Two Achievement Standards and Two Unit Standards of the six assessments are internally assessed, and in each case the requirements for Achieved, Merit and Excellence are clearly explained. These briefs will be marked by the school and the results submitted to NZQA. (Unit Standards are marked as Achieved or Not Achieved)

Meeting deadlines with the given briefs is very important. It is your responsibility to meet these deadlines and to discuss any problems with the teacher well in advance if you are worried about not being able to meet them. The time allocated to each brief is carefully planned and not completing work on time puts the student at risk of not completing the course.

External Assessment

There are two externally assessed achievement standards that are assessed on student work during NCEA Exam period and submitted to the NZQA for marking and national moderation.

Your son / daughter has decided to study TIM at Level 1. To ensure that your child reaches their maximum potential at this grade it is important that the following conditions are met.

  1. All work will be completed to the best standard possible.
  1. All work will be completed and handed to the teacher by the due date.
  1. Students will behave and act in a safe and sensible manner in this subject.

If you have any questions or concerns about this course or this guide please feel free to contact me or call into the Department.

I hope you enjoy Text and Information Management this year and that it fulfils your needs and expectations!!!

Parent/Guardian sign-off sheet

I have read the Course Outline and understand the requirements that must be met for course completion.

I understand that my son/daughter must attend class regularly, bring the required behaviors and attitudes to each lesson and complete the set assignments and projects on time in order that satisfactory progress can be made.

I also understand that, as a significant portion of the class work is assignment work, I will need to provide a space and computer (if, possible) at home where regular homework can be completed.
