1991 / South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR) established / 65 000 South African donors in data base and access to 20 million donors worldwide. The Sunflower Fund raise for bone marrow testing to link with the SABMR
1993 / Tobacco Control Act 83 of 1993 /
  • South Africa the first country to
regulate Tobacco use and sales. Implementation in 1995.
  • SA became a Party to the

1995 / Hepatitis B Vaccination included in the Expanded Programme of Immunisation / Significant impact on liver cancer in longer term
1998 / First National Cancer Control Plan (NCCP) developed under leadership of Prof Sharon Fonn, Wits Public Health and approved by Minister of Health / Cervical Cancer Policy with National Guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of cervical cancer developed and implemented that focus on national screening
2000 / Promotion of Access to Information Act 2 of 2000 / Private sector contributions to the National Cancer Registry became a challenge resulting in very little to no contributions from the private sector, thus making data non-comparable.
2003 / National Health Act 61 0f 2003 established
2004 / CANSA makes the First Call to the DOH to revisit the National Cancer Control Plan in accordance to WHO guidelines and to make provision for main cancers affecting the population / No outcome
2004 / Western Cape Government announces combination of Tygerberg and Groote Schuur oncology units after both units equipment of 30 years defunct. CANSA objects to this and calls for a dedicated Task team to investigate / Ministerial Task team appointed. Both oncology units remain with new equipment and maintenance contracts in place. First dedicated Cancer PPP concluded for George hospital to ensure equitable access for rural patients.
2006 / CANSA makes Second Call to the DOH to update the National Cancer Control Plan / No outcome
2008 / Cancer Research Initiative of South Africa (CARISA) makes the Third Call to the DOH to update the National Cancer Control Plan / Tender advertised and awarded to CANSA. The document however was never distributed or approved.
2009 / SA Pharmacy Council does not approve sale of electronic cigarettes. MCC classify electronic cigarette as Schedule 3. / No policing. Electronic cigarettes sold and used publicly.
2009 / CARISA calls for Cervical Cancer Strategic Research Meeting with DOH to discuss the future /

2011 / Promulgation of Regulations to Cancer Registration effective of 26 April 2011 /
  • Cancer to be regulated to ensure effective cancer data collection that can be used for planning. Task Team developed DRAFT Regulations. Final regulation promulgated however significantly differs from original DRAFT
  • No provision is made for back
dated data from private sector to ensure full data sets that are comparable.
  • Reporting is not linked to health professional that makes the diagnosis as the responsible person to complete registration form. Power left in Head of Health Establishment. No communication strategy linked to the regulation.

2011 / CANCER ALLIANCE established consisting of 22 Cancer Prevention and Control NPO’s and 2 independent advocates. Team of EXCO manages the collective alliance.
