Objectives:

  1. Understand the effects of witnessing domestic violence on children from birth to age 18
  2. Identify appropriate intervention techniques to use with the child and with the non-offending parent
  3. Recognize behaviors of the batterer and victim as parents
  4. Learn how to properly document incidents, develop safety plans, and identify resources for support
  5. Develop protocol for safe and effective response at school or at the workplace

Overview of the dynamics of Domestic Violence; Detailed discussion and case studies of the effects of domestic violence on children (from birth to age 18) that include behavioral changes; health problems; emotional issues and developmental delays.

Guided Discussion/Case Studies /Activity& Lecture:
Discussion, video and class participation on how to make the first call to non-offending parent; how to provide a safe atmosphere for disclosure; how to deal with the batterer; when to call DYFS; protocols for working with school systems or daycare systems; and meeting with either parent.
2:15 PM - 4:00PM:
Guided Discussion/Role Play Activity/Case Studies:
Safety planning for non-offending parent, and developing personalized safety plans that are age-appropriate for children. Review of National and Local Resource/Referral Information (Hotlines, Websites, Organizations, etc) Discussion: Question & Answer; Trouble-shooting incidents that participants need help with.

About the Presenter: Allison Bressler holds a Master's degree in Counseling and Human Development, and has worked as a counselor and advocate for hundreds of victims of abuse since 1999. Formerly, the Director of Non-Residential services in two NY and NJ domestic violence agencies, she has supervised all aspects of programming for adults, teens and children as well as running the Union County domestic violence response teams. Ms. Bressler also spear headed Westchester County's premier annual teen dating abuse symposium. As the Director of Programs at The Joe Torre Safe at Home Foundation, she played a pivotal role in developing and implementing their strongest initiatives. She is currently Co-Founder of A Partnership For Change, a NJ based non-profit that provides prevention and awareness on the issues of domestic violence. MsBressler maintains a private practice in Westwood, NJ and has also worked as an expert witness for domestic violence cases. Her passion to empower individuals and her knowledge of domestic violence has made her a sought-after speaker at many venues in New York and New Jersey. Visit
