SOS India Celebrates International Women’s Day Across the Nation

Begusarai, 8th March, 2017: International Women's Day is marked the world over to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.To acknowledge their achievements and contributions and reaffirm our commitment to empowering them further, SOS India celebrated the International Women’s Day at 32 locations spread across 22 States in India.

SOS Children’s Villages of India (SOS India) is a self-implementing child care NGO, working towards providing secured and loving home to abandoned and parentless children in India through the Family Based Care (FBC) programme. To mainstream such children within a family like environment, the organization selects women who themselves are vulnerable, give them rigorous two to three years of training and transform them as change makers by becoming mothers to in an average of 10 children at a time. She does everything that a biological mother does for her children. 99.9% of them have spent their entire lives dedicated to the organization to take care of children entrusted to her.

SOS India also works for communities to fight against child abandonment under the Family Strengthening Programme (FSP). Through this, vulnerable women headed/BPL families are identified and empowered s that they are better equipped to take care of their own children. Spanning from 5 to 7years, the program aims to enable families to move out of the vicious cycle of poverty towards greater dignity and self-reliance by ensuring education of children and income generating capacity development of the care givers.

Like every year SOS Children’s Village Begusarai celebrated the International Women’s Day at the FSP Community Centre. More than 300 women care givers and guests gathered for the event. The programme was stated with a traditional welcome to the chief guest and the speakers of the day. Village Director Mr. RakeshSinha gave a brief on why International Women’s Day is celebrated. Since the theme of this IWD was Health & Education, specialized speakers were invited to speak on the subject to create awareness among the community care givers. The Principal of ………. School spoke on importance of education and motivated the care givers to make sure their children should go to school and Dr. . …………. From ……… Hospital spoke about how important it is to keep oneself and the community clean to live a healthy life. Some of the care givers share their success stories about education & health improvements in their children. Cultural programme by FSP beneficiaries brought life to the event. After the event, some of the care giver interacted with the speakers.

About SOS Children’s Village – Begusarai.

The Village was established in 2008. There are 14 family homes for 137 children. They create a serene, caring and positive environment that helps build a solid emotional foundation for children growing up in the village. The village also has youth houses for boys; Arunodya is for school-going youth, Sopan is for youth undergoing vocational and professional courses and Gharonda for youth who are in the process of settling down. As of today, 3 youngsters have moved out and got settled. Altogether, there are 56 boys in these youth houses. SOS Begusarai is also strengthening 390 BPL families and reaching out directly or indirectly to over 1289 children in 3 localities of Begusarai.
