Counselor’s Corner

Spring is in the air, and with the warmer weather, we often find an increase in conflicts and social issues arise with our students. We teach our students to use a toolbox of conflict resolution skills to help solve the problems that arise with friends and classmates (and siblings!). Most of the skills are ones they are very familiar with, including sharing and taking turns. We also talk about using humor to try to de-escalate a problem and avoiding the situation by taking a break or walking away.

We also talk about “postponing” the problem solving until the children have calmed down. This gives them a chance to “chill” and increases the odds of better choices. The students are also taught about compromise and using “chance”. Chance includes the idea of “rock, paper, scissors” and flipping a coin. This tool works so well because everyone has a fair chance of winning.

If the problem is not getting good resolution with these ideas, the children can always ask for help. Sometimes we need an objective person to talk to in order to see good options.

You can support your child if they are having problems with other students by reviewing these choices. For sibling issues at home, they may help as well. We all need to know how to calmly solve problems in getting along with other people.

As always, I am available for you and your children if you need support.

The Book Fair will be serving up books kids want to read!

Time: 7:30-4:00 each day

Family Event: April 20th from 4:30-6:00pm

Reading is the most important skill you can teach a child. Of all the skills children learn, it is the one you can influence the most.

We invite you to visit our Book Fair and experience a celebration of reading that provides families the opportunity to get involved in a universal mission: Encouraging kids to read every day so they can lead better lives.

Our Book Fair event brings schools a wonderful selection of fun, engaging, and affordable books kids want to read. Giving kids access to good books and the opportunity to choose their own books will motivate them to read more. Like most acquired skills, the more kids practice reading, the better they

will get.

Reading is vital to every child's success, and raising kids as reader’s means getting involved while they’re young. Now is the time. Since their will never be a substitute for a parent's direct involvement in his/her child's education, please make plans to visit our Book Fair. Hope to see you there!

Dear Roaring Fork School District Community,

Each year, school districts in Colorado are required to report school performance to the community, as required by No Child Left Behind. Because this required information is available on the Colorado Department of Education’s website, districts are no longer required to produce an individual annual report to the public.

Instructions on accessing school and district performance are available below. If you do not have access to the Internet or would prefer to receive a hard copy of this information from the district, contact the Superintendent’s Executive Assistant, Linda Fiske, at 9703846009. A paper version will be mailed to you or be available for pickup.

Access School/District Performance Information on the Colorado Department of Education Website

● Visit the SchoolView Data Center at: h ttp://bit.ly/1zE9ogA

● School districts are listed on the right side of the page, in alphabetical order. Click the arrow below the district name to display schools in a district.

○ Tabs across the top of the page assist users in navigating through the different data sets. The Performance tab contains state test (TCAP) results by grade, school, district and the state.

○ The Accountability tab contains School and District Performance Frameworks (SPF/DPF), federal data requirements (Title I Annual Measurable Objectives and Title III Annual Measurable Achievement Objectives).

○ The Staff tab contains the number of highly qualified teachers in a school or district, as well as teacher equity, which ensures that poor and minority students are not taught by inexperienced, unqualified, or outoffield teachers at higher rates than their white or more affluent peers.

Sincerely, Diana Sirko, Superintendent Roaring Fork School District
