PNFisa stretching TECHNIQUE,that combines passive stretching (The lean overandlet gravity dotheworktype)andisometric stretching (using musclecontraction). It'sconsideredone ofthefastestwaystoincrease static/passiveflexibility.

There arethreewaystoimplement it:

1-Hold/Relax or Contract/Relax-Assumeyourstretching position. Say we aredoing sidesplit stretches. You get intoa stretchtowardsthelimits of yourflexibility. Onceyouarein position, you contract the musclesyou are stretching forabout7-15 seconds, relax fora couple seconds, then doan even deeperpassivestretchfor 10-15 seconds. Then backoutofthe stretch andlet themusclesrelax for20-30 secondsbeforerepeating.

2-Contract/Relax/Contract-Thisissimilarto#1,except youfirst contract theagonist muscles (Theonesthat you arestretching, then after yourelax fora couple secondsyoustretchtheantagonist (opposite) muscles. So,if you aredoing atraditionalsit andreach stretch, you'dreach out, then contract your hamstrings (Which iswhat thereach stretchactually stretches),relax for a couple seconds, then immediately contract your quadriceps, which aretheantagonist musclesforthehamstrings.

3-Hold/Relax/Swing-WARNING!!THISCANBEVERYINJURIOUS!!! Thisisgenerally usedonly by highlevel athletes, that havea lotof control oversuchthingsas stretchreflex. It is the sameas #1 exceptyouusea dynamic orballisticstretchin place of thefinal passive stretch.

Stretchreflex-Thisis what makes#3 very veryrisky. When atendon is placedunderstretch, andget a sudden surge it will automatically contract themuscle. When youcrossyour kneeandthedoc tapsit with ahammerand yourlegkicks, that isusing the stretchreflex of thepatellartendon that anchorsthequadriceps tothelowerleg. You havethemat every joint. So,if youcausethe stretchreflex toactivate when doing #3,youcan EASILY teara muscle or causethetendon totear away (Avulsion)whereit attaches tothebone.

Also, thisisnot a technique that you shoulduseevery day. Stretchevery day,but usePNFstretching no morethan 2-3 timesaweek (On the same muscles, that is.)
