Next Interclub is April 4, 2013. The DeKalb Club is passing the gavel to the Tri-County Club at 5:30 p.m. at the Fox Valley Older Adult Center. This will be Abby’s first foray into being Interclub Chair!

DeKalb County Farm Bureau’s Ag Breakfast (this also counts as an interclub) is on Wednesday, March 20 at 7:00 a.m. at the Farm Bureau. John Fietsam from Monsanto is the speaker. Cost is $10.00. See Jack Goodrich if interested.

Bike Rodeo (biking and safety awareness) – Hosted by the Leadership Academy and the YMCA, will be held on April 27. Along with the Bike Rodeo, the YMCA Healthy Kids Program will have a variety of activities and exhibits pertaining to the well-being of children. See Toney Xidis if you are interested in helping with this.

Bike Club – Greg Spears announced that there is a Bike Club meeting at 7:00 p.m. on 3/14 (tomorrow) for anyone interested in joining a bike club. It meets in the same room we meet in so y’all know where it is.

Pathway Committee Meeting – Next Wednesday (3/20) at 11:30 a.m. (right before our regular meeting). If you aren’t on the pathway committee, you are still invited to attend.

The DeKalb Public Library’s “Community Treasures” will be held on Saturday, May 4 from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. We will have a booth at this event so we are looking for “nicer” treasures. All proceeds from this sale will go towards the Library’s fundraising efforts. Any “treasures” left from this event will be put on sale in our Rummage Sale (date to be determined).

PROGRAM:

Dr. Paul Sørensen, professor emeritus in biology at Northern Illinois University presented today’s program on “Botanical peregrinations.” Paul is a botanist who has a deep love for plants (especially angiosperms – flowering plants). One of his favorites is the shooting star, a beautiful and delicate wild flower which blooms right around Mother’s Day. He recommends going to Beech Cemetery Prairie (approx. 1.25 miles west of Holcomb) to see the most shooting stars. His passion for flowering plants is quite obvious. He related several tales of taking a plant inventory one year and going back the next to find that the plants he inventoried last year were no longer there – often because of human activities be it spraying or introduction of some non-native, invasive species (he told us of a cartoon which appeared in The New Yorker years ago that stated, “If you want a higher standard of living, you have to settle for a lower quality of life”). Paul told us that railroad tracks and cemeteries are good places to see native plants. Despite retiring from Northern Illinois University several years ago, Paul is very active with CPW on campus. He gathers and germinates prairie plant seeds for CPWs annual prairie plant sale held in concert with Earth Day. Paul is also very active with the local Forest Preserve District in creating and maintaining prairies. Jerry Smith recommended that we meet sometime out at Afton for lunch and have Dr. Sørensen give us the “real” plant tour. Be looking for something along these lines to appear in the not-too-distant future.

Quote for the day

Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.
