Finding Your Band Director at the Event:
WARNING: Your Band Director may not be able to attend every performance that day due to LMS Band’s busy schedule. Please be prepared to perform without him/her in the room. If you need to find your director look on the LMS schedule and try to find which LMS event is taking place at that time. If it’s an emergency and you must contact Ms. Adams, call or text her cell @ 360-421-7973.
Dress:
Dress is formal since this is a formal performance. Please dress classy - no jeans or tennis shoes. Look nice.
What to bring:
*Instrument
* Music: Make sure you have a copy of your music to be performed. Also, before the day of the performance, make sure you have your judges’ copy from your band director or your private teacher and have it clearly marked so we don’t lose it. When you get to your performance site, you will give the judge the copy of music and then after you finish performing you are responsible to take it back from the judge and get it back to your band director. If music is found, they will send originals back to your school if the music is clearly marked. There are no copy services available at the contest site.
*Your accompanistJ if you have one
*Extra Stuff: Reeds, Valve Oil, Grease, Rosin, etc.
*Money for food and snacks and/or to pay your accompanist if you have one. Usually they have a Music Booster Program doing a fundraiser selling food. No food in the performance venues please.
What to do when you get there:
1. Relax, millions of kids your age have survived a performance at solo ensembleJ
2. Get you judge’s copy music from your band director or your private teacher if you do not already have it.
3. Find your other ensemble members – plan a meeting spot ahead of time like a specific warm up room
Warm up easily in the warm up room and check to make sure your instrument is all set and valves/reeds/keys are working well. Please share these spaces with others and be respectful of their need to focus on warming up. Please don’t warm-up in the hallways outside of performance rooms.
4. 15 minutes before you play, head to your performance site
5. Check in at the door with the door monitor
6. Watch the performance before yours to see how you would like to set up
7. When it’s your turn, take your judge’s copy to the judge table.
8. Go to the front of the room and get set up so that you can see your accompanist and other members of your group and your music stands are at the correct height
9. Blow warm air through your instrument
10. When the judge is ready, introduce yourself and your group or accompanist using the form Mrs. Monett has provided.
11. Take a deep breath, be CONFIDENT and begin
12. When you finish, bow from the waist and think Hippopotamus! You did it! Please conduct yourself in a positive manner no matter how well your performance went.
13. Thank the judge and do not ask him/her what score you received. The judge will then make a few brief comments for you and hand back the judge’s copy of music to you. Please return this judge’s copy to your band director. Your adjudication forms will be returned to your band director at the end of the day, or mailed in the week following the event.
Behavior:
Please note that the rooms on this campus are not sound proof. That means we’ll all need to be extra quiet in the halls. Please work to keep noise down in the halls (near performance rooms) free of trash and as quiet as possible. This contest is a WIAA and SKMEA sponsored event that aligns with your school district behavioral expectations. Please be considerate in your behavior. SKMEA reserves the right to restrict your participation for inappropriate behavior. Please do not eat or drink in the halls or performances rooms.
Please feel free to check out the LMS schedule and support your friends in the audience while they perform. Thank you for working so hard to musically achieve at high levels! I’m proud of you for all your work! Practice Practice Practice!!
Musically Yours,
Ms. Adams
