Review Committee for Thoracic Surgery

The goals for includinga public member oneach Review Committee include: introducing the perspective of the public; fostering accountability to the needs of the public; enriching the work of the committees through outside expertise; and creating transparency to the work of the Review Committees.

The Review Committee for Thoracic Surgeryis currently soliciting nominees for its next public member.When selecting a qualified candidate, the Committee is trying to address its current needs while maintaininggeographic distribution and diversity among its membership. Examples of needs areas include the following:

a)Patient safety

b)Public health

c)Informatics

d)Health care administration

e)Advocacy

f)Health policy

g)Program evaluation

h)Medical education/medical education research

i)Statistics/epidemiology

In making its selection, the Committee will use the following criteria:

  1. Nominees should have evidence of a distinguished and advanced career.
  2. Nominees should have experience working in a committee structure and be willing and able to commit to the goals and objectives of the Review Committee.
  3. Nominees should have demonstrated a history of leadership and membership in public organizations.
  4. Nominees must not be a physician; nurses and affiliated healthcare providers are permitted.
  5. Nominees must not be a member or employee of an organization that has a vested interest in the outcome of the work of the Review Committee.
  6. Nominees must be able to maintain the confidentiality of the work of the Review Committee.
  7. Due to the size of the Review Committee membership, individuals must not be nominated from the following institutions and states::

a)Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC

b)New York Presbyterian Columbia University Medical Center, New York, NY

c)Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago, IL

d)Ohio State University, Columbus, OH

e)University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX

f)Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, TN

g)Washington University, St. Louis, MO

  1. Nominees must be skilled in the use of computers and electronic systems.
  2. Nominees must be able and willing to devote sufficient time to the Review Committee’s work.

The Review Committee for Thoracic Surgery meets two times per year for program review; usually in April and December. The duration of meetings is one-and-one half-to-two days for program review and business agenda items. Preparation for the meetings is undertaken over a period of one-to-two months preceding the meetings. Review Committee members must devote sufficient time to the Review Committee’s work, in addition to the meetings. Review Committee members must attend all Review Committee meetings.

The selected candidate will be required to attend a new member orientation meetingand an observational Review Committee meeting. The term of the appointment is six years.
