SOG 302.4.1-Work Duty Uniform

PURPOSE: To set guidelines for non-primary protective clothing worn under PPE and proper clothing for members operating on the fire ground not wearing PPE. Proper clothing to be worn while attending academy classes will also be addressed.
OBJECTIVE: Describes, the basic clothing that is considered appropriate attire to be worn for these functions.

- Firehouse
- When performing work duties in or around the firehouse clothing worn should be of an appropriate fashion for the given activity.
- It is understood that basic clothing provides only minimal protection from possible injury, but it can aid in protection.
- Shirts are to be worn to aid in the absorption of perspiration as well as to serve as a minimal protective barrier.
- Long pants are preferred as they serve to protect the legs from nicks and scratches. Shorts are permitted as an option so as to prevent overheating from occurring.
iii. Shoes are to be worn at all times. Rubber soles are preferred and while working in the firehouse, toe protection is recommended but not required.
2. Fire Academy
a. The Bergen County Law and Public Safety Institute (“Academy”) has a strict clothing policy which is enforced.
b. Students shall be appropriately and neatly attired.
c. Sleeveless shirts and shorts shall NOT be permitted including lecture.
d. Full-length trousers and shirts with sleeves are mandatory at all times for all courses, regardless of the use of bunker pants.
e. Students arriving in sleeveless shirts or shorts will be asked to change or leave.
3. No PPE operating on fire scene:
a. Members should be dressed presentably
b. Shoes are to be worn which provide support and have closed toes. Sandals and flip flops will be unacceptable.
c. Pants are preferred but not required.
d. Shirts are required.
e. When operating within the confines of the warm zone a helmet will also be required.
4. Clothing Under PPE:
a. Avoid undergarments made of 100% or a high percentage of polyester, nylon or acrylic.
b. It is recommended that employees wear items which are made from 100% cotton or a 100% flame-resistant blend.
c. Weather conditions may dictate cold or hot weather clothing. In order to prevent Heat related injuries members may wear Short sleeve shirts and shorts during warm weather.
