Sociology and Philosophy Meeting: October 12, 2016 3:00 pm

Present: Gallarde, Diem, Hatch, Lane, McGruder, Rillorta, Stewart-Thomas, Wolde-Yohannes, Tircuit, Merward, Gatillon

I.  Approve minutes for September 2016 meeting : Minutes with revisions were approved

1.  November Meeting is November 9 in the breakroom

2.  December 14 meeting (during Finals week) will be held at 10:15 am instead of at 3:00 pm

II.  Announcements

1.  Student Workers – Tasks can only be department or office related (no grading permitted)

2.  Snack Donations Accepted : Rebecca and Linda have brought snacks already

III.  Department Activities

1.  Annual Human Trafficking Conference: Saturday, November 5th from 9am-1noon

·  Four speakers are confirmed: LiNK, Survivor, Rescue One, Veronica Stephens (Author & Founder of Action Force Network)

·  This event is hosted by Sociology and Philosophy

·  Gallarde, Hatch, Rillorta, Merward, and Gatillon will be there for the entire conference

·  Culture Shock Club will have volunteers to check students in and sign them out

·  Culture Shock Club will sell snacks and waters to raise money for the event

·  I will be promoting the SOCIOLOGY winter and spring schedules and the new Social Justice Degree. It would be great if a FT Phil is there to do the same for PHIL

·  FT Phil Faculty: Charles McGruder and Charles Merward volunteered

2.  Philosophy Club Meetings – Update from Merward – Officially recognized. Going well. Planning outings to UCLA and Cal Tech.

3.  Culture Shock – Update from Linda – Offically recognized. Planning on helping with the Human Trafficking Conference. Have had a lot of guest speakers. About 25 members.

4.  Philosophy Scholarship – Discussion concerning trying to establish a scholarship

5.  Sociology Scholarship – Update from Linda

Five students were awarded scholarships last May 2016.

One student received a $1,000 scholarship and four students received $500 scholarships

Linda revealed that the anonymous donors since the beginning of the scholarship formation have been her husband and herself

Linda will be changing the name of the Sociology Scholarship

6.  Fall/Spring Career Day for Sociology, Social Justice, Philosophy (promoted separately)

·  Two career/major day events have been scheduled (October 31 (10:00 am – 3:00 pm, December 6). Request for 3 sets of canopies, tables, chairs have been submitted for 26 Quad for these dates.

1.  All day booths (banners, program brochures, class schedules, activities)

·  Donations for table decorations accepted (décor, money, or candy)

2.  Philosophy: needs to create, design, and copy the promotional materials (program information, winter 2017 schedule, spring 2017 schedule) and at least one Philosopher (FT/PT) will need to coordinate the day-of event (set up, check in with the student workers at the table. It is better to have Phil faculty present). The student workers will just hand out info to students to visit the table/tent area. An activity or give-away should also be provided to get more traffic to the tables. FT Phil Faculty: David Lane

Charles and Ivan will cover October 31.

Andrea and Sam will cover December 6

3.  Sociology: Banners, posters, handouts, two activities have been created. Several SOC adjuncts have agreed to work the tables. Gallarde will be there all day.

·  MAIN SPRING EVENT:

1.  SOCIOLOGY: 3 speakers @ 20 minutes each: 1) CSU Sociology Advisor 2) Career (Gracelyn) 3) Transfer Student (Stephanie G/UCLA)

2.  PHILOSOPHY: 3 speakers @ 20 minutes each: 1) CSU Philosophy 2) Career 3) Undergrad Student?

·  This event can happen on the same day/time as the Sociology event

·  FT Philosophy faculty needed to create, design, and copy the promotional materials (program information, winter 2017 schedule, spring 2017 schedule), BOOK/CONFIRM speakers, reserve the classroom, and at least one FT Philosopher will need to coordinate the day-of event. FT Phil Faculty: Charles and David will organize PHIL Day

7.  Research Showcase – Update from Marlene & Rebecca

·  Marlene will be coordinating the April 2017 Research Showcase.

·  Event will take place April 18 and 19

This event is hosted by Sociology and Philosophy

8.  Mt. SAC Celebrates 70th Anniversary with Community Carnival and Open House

·  I have reserved a canopy/table/chairs for this event to promote the Sociology and Social Justice Program.

·  Michelle can be there from 10 am – 4:00 pm

·  Marlene can be there after the Human Trafficking Conference

·  Rebecca and Linda can be there after the Human Trafficking Conference from 12-1 pm

·  Many adjuncts will be helping

4.  Phil 15, Phil 15H, SOC 1, SOC 1H, SOC 2, SOC 2H, and SOC 15 will be assessed this fall. Handouts were distributed to SOC full-time faculty. After modifications, these handouts will be distributed to SOC part-time faculty for assessments of the above courses

11.  Social Justice Major/Program – I am a part of this Task Force. Last week, the task force agreed to recommend to the next Task Force on the SJ Curriculum that this degree be housed in Sociology temporarily since two of the core courses are SOC 20 and SOC 40

X.  Scheduling

1.  Vote taken: Adopt the Adjunct Scheduling below: APPROVED

·  Sociology and Philosophy adjuncts are scheduled per the contract. Once full-time schedules are determined, then:

1.  Adjuncts with rehire rights are scheduled for one class.

2.  Adjuncts with rehire rights and H.8 Annual Review ratings of “1” are scheduled with a class. This might be a second class for some adjuncts if they have rehire rights.

·  At this point, ALL contract obligations have been met.

3.  Adjuncts without rehire rights and H.8 Annual Review ratings of “1” are scheduled with a class.

·  At this point, most of the sections have been scheduled.

4.  Adjuncts with H.8 Annual Review ratings of “1” are scheduled with another class. This might be a third class for some adjuncts.

5.  Adjuncts with rehire rights and seniority are scheduled with another class.

6.  Adjuncts without rehire rights are scheduled for a class based on need.

XVI. Andrea Diem – Sabbatical Project

Andrea shared her sabbatical project which she did during the 2015-2016 academic year

Andrea created six original films and wrote 4 books (instead of 2 that she originally scheduled)

All the films and books can be downloaded for free

XVII. Criteria for full-time hires were discussed:

Community college teaching experience preferred

Previous participation with campus clubs or other campus involvement

Experience with curriculum and outcomes development

Research experience
