And The Band Played On
Modern civilization depends on human-made products affecting the major systems of health, water, energy, agriculture, transportation, manufacturing, and communications. These products result from the interdependence of science, engineering, technology, and society. Societal influences often determine, through public funding policies and other societal forces, what scientists research and which of the resulting technologies are put into practice. Any thorough discussion of science must include the values of the individuals, institutions, and cultures in which it takes place. In July 1945,Vannevar Bush, director of the office of scientific research and development for the United States government, the precursor of the National Science Foundation, wrote that "Science is a proper concern of government.” The government’s public policy concernis the well-being of its citizens, and its science policy goal is to consider how science and technology can best serve the public.
All scholarly institutions responsible for public education include society as a necessary component of scientific education. The field of microbiology is affected by society just as any other scientific discipline. The movie And the Band Played On attempts to trace the progression of a new disease from the first individuals affected. This movie chronicles how the government, cultural clusters, scientists, health-care institutions, the media, and those most closely involved with the disease responded to the outbreak and our reactions when confronted with the terrifying words “100% mortality”.Note: This movie does include adult themes and some cursing, along the lines of a PG-13 movie. ATTENDACE IN LAB IS REQUIRED- 5pt. per lab session.
