SOCIAL SCIENCE & EDUCATION

DEPARTMENT MEETING MINUTES

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2002

CSI Mission Statement: The College of Southern Idaho, a comprehensive community college, provides educational, social and cultural opportunities for a diverse population of South Central Idaho. In this rapidly changing world, CSI encourages our students to lead enriched, productive and responsible lives.

In attendance: Alice Anderson,Raquel Arenz, Izabella Bagdasarova, Mary Jo Benoit, LueLinda Egbert, Jim Gentry, Lee Ann Hagan, John Hurley, Dave Makings, Mike McKenna, Chris Meyerhoeffer, R. Tim Miller, Julie Ricks-Doneen, Randy Simonson, Lauri Watkins, Mat Whoolery

Jim began the meeting with a celebration of activities within the Social Science and Education Department. Russ Tremayne and Jim Woods were recently on television the same evening. Department members sponsor many of the student clubs; just to mention three, Russ Tremayne sponsors Phi Theta Kappa, Lee Ann Hagan the Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE), and LueLinda Egbert the CSI Education Club. LueLinda’s group has been very active recently! Alice Anderson, Julie Ricks-Doneen, and Tiffany Eden had recently attended the SRAEYC Conferencewhich was well-attended and successful! Tim Miller gave a report on the Pursuit Seminar for Law Enforcement Driver Trainers project which has impacted more that 220,000 police officers.

Julie Snider (LapwaiElementary School) statesin the “Albertson Foundation Report” that “Five years ago, we had 13% of our students reading at grade level. Today it’s 75%!” This is encouraging.

Other interesting data:the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education Briefsnotes that there is a direct correlation between students’ breakfast habits and their success in school. If students eat a good breakfast, they score better on tests, take better lecture notes, and participate more in class discussion.

Jim distributed another excerpt from the Idaho State Achievement Standards Training Modules; this one on assessment.Examine to get ideas relating to us as individuals and to the department assessments.

The next handout was an article written by Kay McClenney, “Colleges Must Define and Be Accountable for Quality,” from Community College Times 10/15/02 p.3. The article stresses the importance of community colleges being held accountable on such issues as outcome requirements, degree levels and assessment.

We need to develop goals for each of our programs. We have department goals and course goals but most programs do not have well-defined goals. Those program goals should be on our program brochures and on our syllabi. Jim would be glad to discuss program goals with any advisors. As each program advisor completes the goals, please email them to Jim. He will put them all together and share them with the department.

The Education Committee will meet on November 12 in Aspen 134. We will be aligning Initial Teacher Certification Standards with CSI Education Core classes. Please mark your calendars,

The Social Science and Education Department meeting will be held Tuesday, December 3 in Aspen 134 at 1:00.
