Hold the phone in front of you so that the smooth LCD display is facing towards you. If it’s in the correct position, the buttons on the left and right edges will be at the top.

Front

Across the front of the phone is the LCD touchscreen. Along the bottom of the screen are three buttons. Starting from left to right, these are:

·  Green receiver button

·  Home button

·  Red receiver button

Display

Along the top edge of the display is an LED, the speaker (just beneath the silver emporia logo) and the front camera.

Here are the symbols you’ll see on the home screen and their meanings:

·  Battery in top left hand corner: battery charge status – the more filled the battery symbol is, the more charge it has

·  Cog: takes you to the quick settings menu

·  Series of bars going from short to long, in top right hand corner: network coverage

·  Telephone handset: access calls and contacts

·  Envelope: access messages

·  Picture: access your photos and images

·  Letter I in a blue speech bubble: access the information centre.

You’ll also see the time and date displayed on the home screen

Back

Turn the phone over so that the LCD display is facing down towards the table.

Towards the top are two circles; the one on the left is the torch/flash, and the one on the right is the camera lens.

Just below these is a circular button with a heart embossed onto it; this is the emergency button.

On the bottom left corner is a small cut-out which is the loud speaker.

Left edge

Towards the top of the left edge there are two buttons. The button nearest the top is the camera button and the one below is used to turn the torch on and off.

Right edge

Towards the top of the right edge are the two volume control buttons. Press the one nearest the top and printed with a plus sign to increase the volume, and the one below and printed with a minus sign to reduce the volume.

Just below these buttons is a small recessed area which is used for attaching the stylus holder. More information can be found later in this manual.

Top edge

In the middle of the top edge are two sockets which form part of the emporia charging socket.

To the right of these buttons is the silver on/off button.

Getting started

Removing the battery

Locate the cut-out on the bottom left corner of the back of the phone, and using your nail, place it into the cut-out and pull the battery cover away from the back of the phone. Place down next to you.

Note: avoid bending the cover too much, as doing that can damage it.

The battery is contained in a recess in the middle of the phone. To remove it, locate the rectangular shaped cut-out which can be found along the bottom edge of the battery, and use your nail to lift the battery out.

Inserting the battery

Replace the battery so that the metal contacts on the short edge meet the metal contacts within the battery compartment. If the phone is the correct way around, these should be in the top right hand corner. Slide the battery in at an angle and place into the battery compartment.

Replace the battery cover by placing back onto the phone and pushing gently until it clicks into place.

Only use batteries, chargers and accessories that are permitted for this phone. If you don't, the guarantee for the phone will no longer be valid.

If you change the SIM card or SD card, disconnect the charger, turn the phone off and take out the battery.

Inserting a SIM card

To install a SIM card, you’ll need to have firstly removed the battery.

The SIM card slot is in the left hand top corner, above the battery cavity. Slide the SIM card in, with the metal contacts facing down and the corner with the cut-out in the top right position.

Always use a tariff with a data package when using a smartphone. This will save you additional costs when transferring data while using the Internet.

Only use standard SIM cards for this phone. If your SIM card is a different size, your network operator can exchange it for you or you can buy an adapter from a specialist retailer.

Inserting a microSD memory card

The memory card slot is located to the right of the SIM card slot.

Slide your microSD card into the slot with the gold contact facing down. The narrower end of the card should be inserted first.

Only use a memory card that is compatible with this phone, such as a microSD or a microSDHC card.

To take the memory card out again, press it further into the slot until you hear a click. The card will then jump out a few millimetres, making it easy to remove.

If you use an incompatible SIM card or memory card, the phone, the card or the data on the card can be damaged.

Attaching emporia accessories

It is important to emporia that you are able to use your phone easily and safely, which is why the emporiaSMART comes with accessories that enhance phone.

emporiaSTYLUS

If you find it difficult to operate the screen with your finger, you can use the pen-like device provided, the emporiaSTYLUS, instead.

When you tap on the screen with the soft end of the stylus, the phone will respond the same way it does when you tap on screen with your finger.

In order to be able to carry the phone around with the emporiaSTYLUS attached to it, you can affix the emporiaHOLDER, a loop that will hold the stylus.

Turn the phone off and, if the charger is connected, disconnect it from the charger.

Remove the battery cover and take out the battery.

Within the battery compartment, on the left hand side, is a small silver coloured clip.

Remove the clip using your fingernail, by pushing on it from the outside and using the small recess above the clip on the inside. You may require sighted assistance to do this.

Thread the holder loop through the slot from the inside to the outside. Make sure that

the flat side of the emporiaHOLDER is resting against the housing and that the

slope of the plastic part of the holder runs upwards along the plastic plate.

Reinsert the battery and put the cover back on.

If the holder loop is threaded through incorrectly, the battery cannot be reinserted properly.

Only use the soft foam head of the stylus to operate the screen. Do not use the metal tip, as this can leave residue on the screen and is only intended to make it easier to slip the stylus into the holder.

emporia keypad display cover

The emporia keypad display cover is a unique accessory that enables you to add real function keys to your smartphone.

The keypad can make it easier to place calls and write messages. You can fold it out the way and operate the phone via the touchscreen any time, however.

Turn the phone off and, if the charger is connected, disconnect it from the charger.

Remove the battery cover and replace the battery cover with the supplied emporia keypad display cover.

Press the battery cover, which is connected to the keypad display cover, down onto the phone until it clicks into place on each side. Begin with the top edge of the phone.

Finally, pull the keypad display cover forward and fold it over the bottom edge of the phone to cover the screen.

Protect the keypad display cover from moisture and dirt, which can prevent the buttons from working properly. Also make sure that the touchscreen is clean before you place the keypad cover over it. Only use a soft cloth such as a spectacle cleaning cloth to clean the cover and screen. The keypad display cover will work in temperatures ranging from 0 to 40° C.

Using the product

Charging the phone

Before you use the phone for the first time, charge the battery for at least four hours. If you don't charge the phone for this period of time, the battery life could be reduced.

Never connect the phone to the charger, the charging unit or a PC if a battery has not been inserted. Do not attempt to operate the phone without a battery inserted. Doing this can damage the phone.

Using the charging cradle

Place the USB end of the cable into the plug USB socket, and connect the plug to mains power.

Now place the phone on its back onto the cradle with the top edge of the phone at the highest point of the cradle.

Connecting the charging cable directly to the phone

With the keypad located on the screen and facing towards you, locate the pin on the connector so that it is on the left hand side, and pointing down at the top of the phone. Insert the pin into the furthest socket on the left, so that the micro USB connector also locates into its micro USB socket. Push into place.

Place the USB end of the cable into the plug USB socket, and connect the plug to mains power.

Using a computer

Plug the phone into a USB port on your computer. If necessary, disconnect the USB cable from the mains plug to do this.
