HOST reveals the results of a venture promoted by Host - Fiera Milano and POLI.design,the Politecnico di Milano Consortium

Milan, 18thOctober 2013 – The results are out for Smart Label, an accolade promoted by Host - Fiera Milano in partnership with Polytechnic of Milan consortium POLI.design,which isopen to all companies attending Host 2013, the International Professional Catering Fair and world Ho.Re.Ca and Retail industry leader, on this year between Friday 18 and Tuesday 22 October 2013 at the Fieramilano in Rho.

A Panel of Luisa Bocchietto (National Chairman, ADI), Giuliano Simonelli (Chairman, POLI.design Consortium), Maurizio Melis (Scientific Communicator), Giuliano Dall’O’ (Professor, Politecnico di Milano), and Roberto Vitali (President of the Village for All) examined 172 applications from the widest range of market sectors - from furnishing to professional catering, coffee and tea, bar/coffee machinery, tableware and food. At the end of their deliberations, they awarded the SMART Label accolade to 35 products featuring leading-edge functionality, technology, environmental sustainability, and ethical/social impact.In addition, four special mentions were also awarded.

An exhibition showcasing the 35 winning products–which also feature in the special Smart Label Index catalogue –is being held as part of the Friday 18 October awards ceremony.

Seal & Pour - a bag clip system for food storage bags with an opening/closing system, from LINDÈN INTERNATIONAL AB; Livecookintable® - a modular, transportable element-based showcooking system, from MEC2 GmbH; Cold Crystal Display - an info door for refrigerators, from OLITREM INDUSTRIA DE REFRIGERACAO SA;Pacojet 2 - a multifunction food packager from Pacojet AG; Tabula Hot Desk - an outdoor heating table, from POLIDORO S.P.A; Xcelsius - a coffee-making water dispenser temperature control system, from the Rancilio Group S.p.A; Rendisk Flex WasteDispo - a food waste management product, from Rendisk; ECOSAVER SYSTEM - a low energy consumption dryer with air cycling, from RENZACCI S.p.A.INDUSTRIA LAVATRICI; SYRIO - a refrigerated glass display case, from SAGI S.p.A; Eko Fit - modular aluminium racking, from TONON; and UNOX Cook.Code - a code for standardizing cooking processes, from UNOX S.p.A.

The Panel also awarded a special mention to four of the thirty-five innovative winning products for features that pushed the envelope beyond consolidated trends in their particular sectors, improving on widely-adopted, tried-and-tested solutions. The four special mentions went to:

  • ALESSI S.p.A. - PASTA POT - a pasta-cooking pot with built-in spoon and lid -for its ability to integrate multiple functions into a single item without neglecting a design-for-all approach;
  • EVERSYS AG - The e’4 / e’4m - coffee machine - for its advanced remote control management system;
  • LINDÈN INTERNATIONAL AB - Twixit!Seal & Pour -a bag clip system with an open/close mechanism that makes it possible to pour contents -for the unique nature of this game-changing innovation, its positive impact on product preservation, measuring out doses and practicality of use;
  • UNOX S.p.A.- UNOX Cook.Code -A barcode-based receipt to standardize cooking processes - for its ability to digitize processes and simplify cooking and management.

All of these products were selected and judged on three basic criteria:

  • Product or service function effectiveness;
  • Product performance effectiveness/service accessibility;
  • An innovative-led approach to access, technology and user benefits.

The whole Smart Label initiative was launched to add value to individual products and leading-edge companies, but most important of all to promote a sector that is a hotbed of innovation and dynamism, providing benefits across the entire hospitality market. The high number of applications and the quality of the products and services submitted are proof that despite the downturn, many companies in this sector continue to look ahead and renew themselves, aware that enhancing their products is the only practicable way of putting the manufacturing and finance crisis behind them.

Over its 37-year history, Host has become the go-to event for technological innovation in the sector, as a global marketplace where 1,600 companies from around the globe meet 1,500 profiled hosted buyers and 125 thousand industry professionals.At Host 2013, a new concept-driven approach to exhibiting has grouped supply chains from contiguous sectors into three macro-areas, further enhancing growth opportunities for business and innovative ideas:Professional Catering and Bread, Pasta, and Pizza; Bar - Coffee Machines, Coffee/Tea, Pastry and Ice Cream-Making; and Furnishings and Tableware.

POLI.design: Founded in Milan in 1999, this Consortium promotes the Politecnico di Milano’s entire Design System, notably the facilities and lecturers at Europe’s leading experimental design workshops based on its Bovisa campus.POLI.design focuses squarely on design and the design-led disciplines, from the product right through to communication, spanning the fields of interior design, fashion, service and events.The Consortium runs university-level Masters courses at the Polytechnic of Milan School of Design, offering higher scientific and professional education to graduates of first- and second-level degrees.With the School of Design and Department of Design, POLI.design is part of the Politecnico di Milano’s Design System – a research, training and promotions hub unique anywhere in the world.
