Explanation of Class Assignments
All assignments must be typed, 12-pt font, 1-in margins. Proofread all assignments before handing them in! Points will be deducted for late assignments. Assignments not listed will be given as handouts later.
Journals (10 Pts each): Be sure to answer ALL the questions in the prompt. Points will be taken off from shallow answers. Provide as much detail as possible for each journal.
Journal 2
- Write a list of 15 or more specific actions you have taken in the past two days. The actions are
specific if someone could have recorded you doing them. - Using an entire page, draw a four-quadrant chart like the example on p.87.
- Write each action from your list in the appropriate quadrant. After each action, put the approximate amount of time you spent in the activity. For example, Quadrant IV might contain: Watched TV (2 hours), Phone Call to Mom (1 hours), Went to the Mall (4 hours), etc.
- Write about what you learned or relearned concerning your use of time. What exactly did you discover after analyzing your time? In which quadrant do you spend the most time? What specific evidence did you sue to draw this conclusion? If you continue using your time in this way, are you likely to reach your goals and dreams? Why or why not?
End of Semester Letter (100 Pts): Write a letter to next semester’s SLS1501 students including what you learned this semester, what mistakes you made, and pieces of advice. All names or other identifiable information will be removed before being shared with the incoming class. Please be honest and reflective.
Case Study Team Presentations (25 Pts each): Students will be divided into teams of 5. Each team will present 2 cases total on 2 separate days. Presentations should include the following: Summary of case study, answers to the questions, and the encouragement of class participation. Teams do not need to use visual aids (unless they are feeling creative). Each team member must present for each of the case studies in order for any credit to be awarded. If a team member is not pulling his/her weight, it is the responsibility of the team to inform the instructor.
Campus Events (25 pts each): Each student is required to attend 2campus events at any of the three campuses.
What will count as events:
On-campus activity (i.e. Welcome Back Bash, any multicultural event, Veteran’s Day Observance, College Night, LSCC sporting event, speaker/presentation, Nursing Information Session, etc.)
Community service (with instructor approval in advance) as long as it’s something you don’t already do (i.e. donate blood, Habitat for Humanity, reading to children, etc.)
After participating in the event, type a summary and reaction paper including a brief description, date attended, and if applicable, newly met classmates who went with you. Most importantly, write about what you gained from attending the event, what you learned about yourself, etc. (If you didn’t get anything out of it, don’t turn it in). Due within 1 week of event.
Personal Success Portfolio (throughout semester) (100 pts): Students are expected to create and maintain organization systems to advance success. Regular use of a Planner and a neat, thorough Personal Success Portfolio (binder) will be expected. Your PSP must include:
Section 1: Course Syllabus
Section 2: Journals
Section 3: Quizzes
Section 4: Case Study notes from team meetings & All written assignments
Section 5: Career Portfolio
Section 6: All handouts & class activities
Section 7: LSCC Catalog and Student Handbook
Career Portfolio (150 pts): Instructions and expectations to be handed out at a later time
Homework (100 pts): All Assigned homework is due the next class. This will total 100 points toward your grade. It is important to do homework to reinforce course material as well as be able to have intelligent discussion about chapter and pertinent ideas for student success in college.
