Sloan’s Lake Neighborhood Association

Minutes of the Meeting

January 9, 2012

The meeting was called to order by President Michael Smilanic at 7:10 pm at the Sloan’s Lake Community Church, 27th & Utica St. There were 8 members and 2 guests present, Officer Eric Denke from District 1 Police Department and Rafael Espinosa from Jefferson Park United Neighbors.

The Minutes of the October 2011 meeting were approved without corrections or additions.

Since the Treasurer, Jane Parker-Ambrose could not be at the meeting Sybille made the report for her. As of 1-1-12 the group has $ 2,073.64 in the bank with 3 outstanding checks totaling $ 156.

The group has only 3 registered members as of today but a flyer was sent out by Sybille to remind all members that their 2012 dues are due.

People interested in working on “Return of the Pelicans” plant and yard sale need to contact Jane at 303-571-1744. This had been discussed at the Board of Directors’ meeting as an event taking place in conjunction with a block party. More details will follow.

Officer Denke reported that there have been very few major crimes in our neighborhood but there have been lots of burglaries, burglaries from cars and car thefts. Once again he stressed not to leave valuables in your car, lock your car and secure your home.

The police are looking at a suspect in the burglaries. (Note: the suspect Officer Denke told us about turned out to be the burglar. He was captured on Wednesday in the act. He is now in custody and hopefully the police can clear up some of those crime reports.)

The crime reports are attached with the Minutes of the Meeting.

No one from CW Shepherd’s office was able to attend the meeting.

Rafael Espinosa from Jefferson Park United Neighbors reported on the signage variance requested by Sports Authority to erect three new signs on the curved ring wall along the upper edge of the Broncos Stadium. He explained about all the negative effects this will have on the neighborhood. He encouraged us to send our comments to project coordinator . For more information on this issue go to:

There is a hearing January 24 at Councilwoman Shepherd’s office with all concerned RNO’s and Sports Authority.

A hearing with the Denver Planning Board is set for February 15.

In an email vote with Board members, the Board voted against granting a variance to Sports Authority.

A representative from Brownfield, the company for the redevelopment of St. Anthony’s Hospital, attended the SLNA Board Meeting in December 2011. He discussed at length the desire Brownfield has to make the redevelopment a reflection of the input from the neighborhood organizations and residents. As they are in the beginning of the process, he cautioned it would take time, and must be balanced with market need and economics.

The decision for their contractual agreement with St Anthony’s will be made in June and it will take 6 to 9 months for the plans to be completed after that. He again stated he is committed to working with the neighborhood groups to include gathering more input and reviewing proposed plans together.

There was no new business.

The meeting adjourned at 8:10 pm.
