Indoor Walkways:
Walkways are inspected frequently by trained personnel to identify hazards
Walkway surface is Moderate to High Traction as tested per ANSI/NFSI B101.1 or B101.3
Walkways are maintained using an NFSI Certified High-Traction cleaner, finish, or treatment
Employees wear slip resistant footwear
Steps and Stairs:
Steps are of uniform height and do not vary by more than 3/8” between each step
Handrails are provided on at least one side of the stairway
Doors do not open over stairways or ramps
Stair landings have a High-Traction surface
Stairways and landings are well lighted
Step nosings are of a contrasting color to that of the tread
Step nosings and treads are High-Traction
Restrooms:
Walkways have a High-Traction surface
Walkways are maintained in a dry condition
Locate paper towel dispenser near sinks as to prevent dripping of water
Locate trash receptacle near paper towel dispenser
Single entrance restrooms are barricaded during mopping
Buckets, mops, brooms, etc., should are not located in pedestrian pathways
Floor Cleaning/Spill Removal
Once identified, employees stay with the spills until it can be cleaned
Small contained spills are removed by using paper towels and not a mop and bucket as to not expand the wet hazard area
Floors are not mopped during high traffic periods
End of day cleaning of kitchen floors requires the proper use of an NFSI Certified floor cleaner or treatment.
Kitchen floors should be brushed and rinsed nightly
Dining room floors are cleaned using a separate mop and bucket from that of the kitchen
Floor Matting
Entranceway matting should be of the correct size and type (see ANSI/NFSI B101.6)
Carpet wiper style carpet mats are located between the kitchen and the dining room as to remove kitchen based contaminants from employees footwear
Abrasive type matting are used at cooking stations
Anti-fatigue style mats are used at all wet areas (ie: mop sink, dishwashing area, etc.) and rubber scraper type mats are used at all self service drink stations and ice machines
Mats have an NFSI Certified High-Traction” backing to prevent movement/slippage
Mats are inspected frequently to insure they do not buckle, curl, or migrate

Edge rippled mats are removed from service

Warnings and Barricades
Wet Floor or Caution signs are posted at all areas which lead to and in advance of a wet floor hazard
Caution signs are at least 28” tall and visible form 360 degrees
Caution signs are immediately removed when floor is dry. Caution signs are not posted when floors are dry
Barricade hallways during floor cleaning as to prevent entry
Place adhesive safety tape over cracked or broken tiles or other walkway trip hazards until damage can be repaired or replaced
Walkway elevations of ¼” or greater need to be identified by way of a contrasting colored marking
