Contest Scope

Contest: Nursing Assisting

Contest Chairperson: Virginia White
Contest Site: TCHS Brandywine Campus

Purpose:

To promote trade and excellence in a competitive situation and give Health Occupations students an opportunity to demonstrate skills performed by a nursing assistant.

Uniform/Clothing/Safety Requirement:

Competitors may wear their program uniform (any color) with school name covered so as not to identify the competitor. The student should be wearing white closed toe uniform nonskid style shoes, vinyl or leather. Socks should also be worn with shoes.

Guidelines:

The following references were used for the written test and the skill procedures in this competition.

Sorrentino, Sheila. Mosby's Textbook for Nursing Assistants, 8th Edition

Equipment/Tools/Supplies/Materials Provided:

·  Clinical Lab areas will be provided for the competitors for skill testing.

·  Wheelchairs will be provided.

·  BP and vital signs equipment will be provided.

·  Patient gowns will be provided.

Equipment/Tools/Supplies/Materials To Be Provided By the Contestant:

1.  Watch with second hand

2.  Set of linens: (two large flat sheets, one draw sheet [a flat sheet may be used], one pillow case).

3.  Blanket or spread (optional)

4.  Barrier devices (gloves, gown, goggles, mask)

5.  Gait belt

6.  Stethoscope

7.  Pencils and pen

Scope of the Contest:

1. Competitors must complete a written knowledge test that include but are not limited to activities of daily living, anatomy and physiology, basic human need, communication skills, employability, safety and nutrition, etc.

2. Contestants will be rotated through one or more of the following contest areas:

¡  Job A- Handwashing

¡  Job B- Making a closed bed

¡  Job C- Make an occupied bed

¡  Job D – Measure and record vital signs

¡  Job E – Transfer a patient

¡  Job F- Changing a Patient’s Gown

Competitors may be given a scenario to read prior to beginning the skill. The scenario is a secret topic. Professional ethics demand that competitors DO NOT discuss or reveal the secret topic until after the event has concluded. Competitors who violate this ethical standard may be disqualified.

Contestants will be judged on:

§  Ability to complete task in the time allotted.

§  Performing the task correctly. Points for each step of the skill accomplished will be added to determine the competitor’s final score for each procedure.

§  In case of a tie, the highest test score will be used to determine rank
