______
I. Approval of minutes from May 2 meeting: minutes were approved as written.
II. Employee Appreciation Day Final Report: The EAD Committee completed their report on this year’s event and compiled recommendations for next year. The Steering Committee worked very hard and the event was a success, despite the weather-related changes for the picnic location. The budget request for EAD 2002 is lower than this year, based on reduced wages for the registrar and several other factors. There was some discussion about requesting less money for next year’s activities, but it seemed a positive move to recognize the economies made and to project continued careful budgeting.
The entire report will be forwarded to the President’s Office as part of the EAC final report.
III. EAC Annual Report 2000-01 discussion/approval: Tina circulated the EAC report prior to today’s meeting. It is obvious from the report that the EAC was very active throughout the year, and that efforts towards improving recognition of employees, involving more staff in university commissions and committees, and continuing to offer and promote Employee Appreciation Day were successful. The entire report was approved by the committee and will be forwarded to the President’s Office. It will also be posted on the EAC website.
IV. Other Business:
· Jackie recently received two inquiries about the JMU holiday schedule, specifically disappointment that Memorial Day is usually a workday for the university. Brian reported that there is no official written JMU policy stating that employees work on state holidays when the students are on campus, however this is the understood policy for the university. Tina suggested that when the 2002 holiday schedule is circulated to employees, that a statement of the process of assigning holidays be attached for employees’ information. Brian advised that the Department of Human Resource Management (DHRM) would be sending the 2002 holiday schedule shortly; he will send it to the EAC for review and comment. Recommendations then go to the vice presidents to approve the JMU schedule on or around September 15. Since the EAC will not meet until late September or early October, Brian will forward the DHRM notice to Jackie and Camilla to circulate by email.
· Brian gave an update on the service award proposal and progress toward a final process. Mr. King will be assigning a committee to work on the service award program. It may be possible to hold the inaugural combined award program for faculty and classified staff in the new Leealou Alumni Center, in spring 2002. Brian will meet with Mr. King on June 26, and hopefully provide us with an update on the event.
· Tina and Jackie thanked all the committee members for their dedicated service to the Employee Advisory Committee this past academic year. Special recognition was made to Tina Updike for her service as chair and co-chair of the EAC for the last three years. Camilla Washington will join Jackie as EAC co-chairs for next year.
The meeting adjourned at 2:00 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Jackie Ciccone and Christina Updike, Co-Chairs
