Important Contest Information

Registration cost: $10.00 per contestant payable by P.O., or check (day of competition)

Please make checks out to: Puget Sound Region SkillsUSA. (SkillsUSA would work if the check is already done. One check per school would be helpful.

Remind students to bring a sack lunch.

No cell phones or Ipods, etc. will be allowed during the contest.

Students must be currently registeredSkillsUSA members (State and National). Please bring Picture ID.

Contestants need to provide a current copy of their resume.

Contestants are expected to dress appropriately. No loose clothing, or clothing with tears and holes, and nothing that identifies the students’ school. Polo type shirts are recommended. Lab safe shoes are required (no sandals or open toed shoes). Please be advised there are additional expectations for clothing at the state and national competition levels.

Please print off a copy of the SkillsUSA registration list for your students and have it at the time of registration.

Please email me the names (correctly spelled) of all contestants by January 17, 2015, so we can arrange work stations and project materials.

Please bring a copy of your lab permission form signed by the student and parent/guardian.

We are able to host 18-20 competitors. I believe I’ve contacted all participating schools via phone or e-mail. If you have some last minute cancellations, try to let me know so we can fill the vacancies with other contestants from other schools. Tools Needed For Each Contestant:

Safety glasses (Clear glasses only. No dark or mirrored glasses)

Nail Apron - optional

Measuring Tape

Claw Hammer

Combination Square

Two Pencils

Nail set

Utility Knife

Wood Chisel (1/2” or 3/4” would be fine)

One set of flat blade and Phillips-head screwdrivers or handle with interchangeable bits

Sanding block

Hand scraper/cabinet scraper

Calculator

Sandpaper A few pieces of 100grit, 120-150 grit and 220 grit would be fine

Hearing protection

The Auburn Riverside shop is very well equipped with stationary power tools. There will be plenty of work stations for the contestants.

Optional items:

Each school may want to bring some of the following items:

Pocket-hole jig and clamps, cordless drills or corded drill, palm sander, biscuit joiner, brad nailer for ½” and ¾” stock, air hose, bottle of wood glue.

Project Information:

The project is a small wall cabinet. Students will be using European overlay hinges, assembling a frame with pocket screws, and cutting outside miters on 2 ¼” crown molding. A quick demonstration will be given, before the competition starts.

Judging criteria includes: plan reading, cutting list, material layout, safety, machining skills, assembly skills, having a completed project that is ready for the finish room. Students will also be given a written woodworking knowledge test and a SkillsUSA Professional Knowledge test.
