FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT

SIXTH SEMINAR FOR HOMOGENIZATION AND

QUALITY CONTROL IN CLIMATOLOGICAL DATABASES AND

COST ES-0601 “HOME” Action Management Committee and Working Groups MEETING

BUDAPEST, HUNGARY

26 – 30 May 2008

Organized by the Hungarian Meteorological Service

Supported by WMO and COST Office

Background

The first five Seminars for Homogenization of Surface Climatological Data were held in Budapest and hosted by the Hungarian Meteorological Service. They have initiated scientific discussion in this field of climatology, and also the 14th Commission of Climatology, held in Beijing, expressed its satisfaction with the results of these seminars. The proceedings of the fifth Seminar is publishing now, the material of the 4th seminar is available in the WCDMP series of WMO. Climate change impacts have become more important according to the Fourth Assessment Report of IPCC. But there is no climate change research without good quality long-term time series. The World Meteorological Congress urged efforts to develop standardized methods for homogenisation and quality control. Furthermore, it suggested undertaking measures, using recently developed techniques, to test homogeneity of all long climatological time series, to homogenize them and to make high quality time series available. New COST Action has launched on homogenisation, the so called HOME COST in 2007, what shows the importance of this topic. This seminar will be a joint event with this COST Action.

Highlights and Call for Papers

Homogeneous and high quality time series are indispensable for the examination of climate change and climate variability. The central goal of this Seminar is to promote the discussion of homogenization and data quality control methods, with emphasis on their practical applications and theoretical aspects. The main topics are intended to be the following:

—  Methods for homogenization and quality control of monthly data

—  Comparison of series, inhomogeneity detection, correction of series

— Methods for homogenization and quality control

of daily data

—Experience regarding homogenization and quality

control of different meteorological elements

— Theoretical evaluation of methods

— Test procedures for evaluation of methods

If you intend to present a paper at the Seminar, please send us a short abstract (max. 1 page) not later than 15 April 2008. Electronic submission is preferred. The abstracts of the presentations will be available during the meeting. Paper form of the presentations should be delivered by the end of the Seminar. Publication of the proceedings is foreseen after the Seminar. Paper format information will be provided in the second circular.

Registration fees (including book of abstracts, coffee break, social event, proceedings) will be defined in the second circular. The meeting is free for the MC members of HOME COST Action. Limited funding support may be available. The second circular including registration fees, support and accommodation information will be sent in April 2008, only to people who send pre-registration.
