Course Description: Physical education is a 9 week course that incorporates a variety of skills, games, and fitness activities.

Curriculum Overview:

The following academic concepts will be covered. THIS IS ONLY A GUIDE AND IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE. It is our goal to develop and educate the student through a variety of interesting and meaningful activities so that the student will realize his/her maximum physical, mental, and social capacities. The goal of Physical Education is to promote in each student in the following areas:

C. Movement skills and knowledge

D. Social development

E. Individual excellence

CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

Course Content: Traditional and non-traditional games and sports, team and individual activities, experimental curriculum, cooperative games, team building, fitness education and training, social skills and personal responsibility are included in the 9 weeks course.

Grading System: The DeKalb County School District believes that the most important assessment of student learning shall be conducted by the teachers as they observe and evaluate students in the context of ongoing classroom instruction. A variety of approaches, methodologies, and resources shall be used to deliver educational services and to maximize each student’s opportunity to succeed. Teachers shall evaluate student progress, report grades that represent the student’s academic achievement, and communicate official academic progress to students and parents in a timely manner through the electronic grading portal. See Board Policy IHA.

Notes:

*English Learners (ELs) must not receive numerical or letter grades for the core content areas in elementary and middle school during their first year of language development. A grade of CS or CU must be assigned. This rule may be extended beyond the first year with approval from the EL Studies Program. English Learners must receive a grade for ESOL courses.

~Elementary schools will utilize P (pass) and F (fail) in Health/Physical Education, Music, World Languages, Visual Arts and Performing Arts.

DISTRICT EXPECTATIONS FOR SUCCESS
STUDENT PROGRESS / Semester progress reports shall be issued four and a half, nine and thirteen and a half weeks into each semester. The progress of students shall be evaluated frequently and plans shall be generated to remediate deficiencies as they are discovered.Plans shall include appropriate interventions designed to meet the needs of the students. See Board Policy IH.
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY / Students will not engage in an act of academic dishonesty including, but not limited to, cheating, providing false information, falsifying school records, forging signatures, or using an unauthorized computer user ID or password. See the Code of Student Conduct - Student Rights and Responsibilities and Character Development Handbook.
HOMEWORK / Homework assignments should be meaningful and should be an application or adaptation of a classroom experience. Homework is at all times an extension of the teaching/learning experience. It should be considered the possession of the student and should be collected, evaluated and returned to the students. See Board Policy IHB.
MAKE-UP WORK
DUE TO ABSENCES / When a student is absent because of a legal reason as defined by Georgia law or when the absence is apparently beyond the control of the student, the student shall be given an opportunity to earn grade(s) for those days absent. Make-up work must be completed within the designated time allotted. See Board Policy IHEA.
SCHOOL EXPECTATIONS FOR SUCCESS
CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS / 1. Come to class prepared and with a good attitude!
2. Dress out every day.
3. Lock your belongings in your locker and keep your dressing area neat.
4. Sit in your assigned floor spot upon entering the gym.
5. Follow all PE teachers’ directions.
6. Participate at your highest level in all class activities.
7. Follow all class rules each day.
MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES / Champion Theme Middle PE Uniform, all black tennis shoes and combination lock.
Dress / For safety and hygiene, students MUST change clothes to participate in Physical Education Class. In order to be considered dressed out; the student must wear the school issued Gym suit. Which is gold shorts (boys) and maroon shorts (girls) with gold/maroon shirts (all PE clothing must have the school logo on it), socks, and black tennis shoes. The old gray and maroon PE uniform will not be honored. You may purchase the Champion Theme Middle School PE uniform for $25.00 sizes S-XXXL. The Gym shirt cost $12.50 and the gym shorts cost $12.50, if purchased separately. Students may bring cash or money order payable to Champion Theme Middle School. Students will not be allowed to wear T-Shirts or another pair of shorts under the uniform.
Locker Room and Gym: / Each student will choose their own private locker in the locker room for the storage of their belongings during PE class. Students must provide their own combination lock for the locker. It is the student’s responsibility to make sure all personal items in the locker room are secured. Each student will be given ten minutes to get dressed. Anyone reporting tardy to class (without a pass), will not be allowed to dress out for the period and will receive a non-participation grade. Any student reporting tardy to class (with a pass) will not be allowed to dress, but will be allowed to participate. No perfume, spray deodorant (please provide stick deodorant) are not allowed in the locker room. No food, gum, candy or drinks are allowed in the Physical Education Classes. Water bottles are allowed when the classes are outdoors. If a student is caught breaking any rule, the consequences are no credit for dressing out and participation for that day. All students must remove their locks at the end of class. If the locks are not removed, it will be cut at the end of the day.
Excuses: / A written note from a parent/guardian can excuse a child from PE for up to two days. On the third day, a doctor’s note required to excuse a student from participating. During that time period, the student DOES dress out. Please state the type of illness/injury and the duration of the excuse.
Conduct: / Students are expected to show respect for themselves, peers, faculty, and staff. Students should demonstrate responsibility by following directions from teachers as well as class rules. Because students are continuing to grow in their personal development, it may be necessary for a teacher to correct misbehavior and for a student to receive consequences. Consequences will include but not limited to: warning, conference, parent contact, detention, and administrative referral.
