Sixth Grade Language Arts Course Syllabus

Course Description:

The sixth grade language arts class is a balanced literacy program in which students are challenged to improve in the areas of reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, spelling, speaking, and listening.

Textbook:

·  Scott Foresman – Reading Street; 2008

·  Houghton Mifflin – Write Source 2000; 1999

Additional Materials:

spelling workbook, novels, picture books, poetry books, nonfiction books, newspapers, magazines, reference materials, and Internet

Major Objectives:

·  Develop strategies for reading to obtain information and improve comprehension.

·  Develop an enriched vocabulary.

·  Write for a variety of purposes with emphasis on the narrative, informative, and persuasive forms.

·  Improve composition skills within the five domains: focus, content, style, organization, and conventions.

·  Strengthen skills of spelling and word structure.

·  Develop skills of public speaking

Course Requirements:

·  Be prepared for class with notebook, homework, pencil, paper, independent reading material, and textbook.

·  Complete required assignments, projects and assessments

·  Actively participate in class discussions and group work

Grading System:

·  The percentage scale presented in the student planner will be used to determine grades.

·  Points will be deducted from the student’s grade and homework detention may be given for accumulated missed assignments.
