Five College JIS – Start Exercise / ALL / No Image
During the exercise it will be important to remember and comply with the following statements:
· It is important NOT to jump ahead in the exercise scenario. In other words don’t focus on what might happen, focus on the Common Operating Picture that is presented during the exercise to make informed decisions.
· In any exercise a number of assumptions and artificialities may be necessary to complete play in the time allotted. During this exercise, the following apply:
1. The scenario is plausible, and events occur as they are presented.
2. There is no “hidden agenda”, nor any trick questions.
· Exercise Basics:
1. This exercise contains a total of 24 scenario and inject pages.
2. Thoroughly review all scenarios and injects as they are presented during the exercise
3. There is a scheduled 15 minute break approximately half way through the exercise.
· At the end of the exercise you will need to complete an evaluation (Hotwash) on how your team preformed during the exercise. The Hotwash will consist of your team providing comments on three areas in which it performed well and three areas for your consideration to improve or modify existing plans for your agencies preparedness, response and recovery capabilities. Found below are Hotwash examples:
Strength – During the exercise our team consulted our disaster plans and procedures and found them to be complete.
Area for Improvement – During the exercise our team consulted our disaster plans and procedures and found portions of the plans and procedures that need to be revised.
· After the exercise each registered participant who took part in the exercise will receive an e-mail to log into the ONX System to complete their Individual Hotwash to access their Certificate of Participation.

Five College JIS – Inject – # 001 / ALL / Image of Sushi Roll
Sunday / Day 1
For the past several days the Daily Collegian, an independent newspaper serving the UMass community, has been featuring articles regarding the “World’s Largest Sushi Roll” event to be held on the campus of Amherst College at 2:00PM today.
The mission of the event, besides being recognized by Guinness World Records as having made the largest sushi roll in the world, is to engage local non-profit organizations and high school students in a college / community collaboration effort to strengthen relationships between the students and facility of the five colleges and the local community.
The Amherst College Police Department is expecting up to 1,500 individuals to attend the event and have plans in place to handle the expected crowd.
Similar community events involving students and facility from Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke and Smith Colleges along with UMass Amherst occur almost every weekend.
While campus and local police departments may monitor special event planning among the five colleges, would your organization’s (college, town, etc.) public affairs / information staff monitor such up-coming activities? / Yes / No

Five College JIS – Scenario – # 002 / ALL / Image of Event Clean-Up
By 4:00PM the team preparing the gigantic sushi roll has accomplished their goal and events participants can be found helping themselves to sizable portions of this record setting sushi roll.
Most of the events participants have left by 5:45PM and the event crew begins to dispose of the left over sushi roll and clean-up the area.

Five College JIS – Inject – # 003 – UM / UMass Amherst / Image of Health Services
Day 3 / Tuesday
At 4:23PM, a junior UMass Amherst Food Science major, Dennis Leary, reports to the University Health Services (UHS) at UMass Amherst complaining of fever, severe diarrhea, malaise, loss of appetite and abdominal pain.
Dennis states that he’s been feeling bad for the last three days.
He is seen by a Nurse Practitioner (NP) who suspects Hepatitis after examination. The NP orders a blood sample and sends it off to the lab.
During the patient interview, it’s found out that the patient works at Amherst College Dining Services and has been going to work for the past two days, while sick.
Due to the severity of the patient’s condition, the NP decides to send him to Cooley Dickinson Hospital for an overnight stay while awaiting test results.
Based on the information, would the UHS be expected to notify any university departments and / or local agencies? / Yes / No
If the above answer is yes. – Identify the university departments and / or local agencies that would be contacted and briefly describe the type of information that would be shared with that department and / or agency and how the information will be shared.

Day 4 / Wednesday
At 9:14AM test results confirm that Dennis is positive for Hepatitis A.
A contact investigation by a nurse with UHS confirms that Dennis is employed by Dining Services at Amherst College.
He is a prep cook who worked over the weekend preparing salad bar vegetables and ingredients used in the "World's Largest Sushi Roll" prepared during the community engagement event.
Dennis lives with four roommates in an off campus apartment on Bay Road. His roommates include another UMass Amherst student and two Hampshire College students.
Dennis is currently taking 16 credits and enrolled in FD-SCI 541, FD-SCI 544, RES-ECON 241, RES EC 121, COMP SCI 105, and FD SCI 381C.
Dennis has a girlfriend who is a sophomore Chemistry Major at Smith College.

(Note: University Health Services (UHS) at UMass Amherst is currently experiencing the following health emergency.)
Day 3 / Tuesday

UMass Amherst has used the Event Dispatch Notification Form to notify each of the colleges and municipalities of the current public health threat.
UMass Amherst checked the Conference Call box under Required Actions on the form indicating that they would like to conduct a call with public information representatives from each of the colleges or municipalities.

Day 4 / Wednesday / 11:57AM
Dennis remains in Cooley Dickinson Hospital, however due to a previously undiagnosed liver condition; his condition takes a dramatic turn for the worse and he is admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.
Dennis’ roommates find out about his condition and immediately set up a Facebook Page “Pray for Dennis” and send it out to their friends and family.
In a matter of fifteen minutes the page has 750+ likes.
Students also begin using the Twitter hashtag #Pray4Dennis to provide messages of support.

As the day goes on more students begin to hear about Dennis’ condition.
In addition, social media posts and tweets are stating that Dennis works for Dining Services at Amherst College and was part of the staff prepping the ingredients for the “World’s Largest Sushi Roll”.
Students from all of the area’s colleges start to express concern on social media that they could potentially have been exposed.
Additionally, each of the area’s colleges begins to be overwhelmed with phone calls and e-mails from both students and concerned parents.
